I 100% agree that Tiger's chip is the most iconic shot. The timing, the way the ball teetered on the edge, and then the celebrations.

Audacity is an unusual word to use though (in my opinion). The shot he took on was the percentage play, it's far trickier to go directly at the flag. It was a safe chip and run and 99% of the field would have played it the same way. Tiger just had the knack of making things happen at important moments!
Yeah I thought that as well. It was just a chip to get it close to the hole, executed perfectly.

There are so many I could never pick one and I am not old enough to have seen them all.

I would throw in to the melee

Christy O'Connor's shot in to the 18th at the Belfry 1989

He allegedly sold that 2 iron many times over, all in the name of charity.

Tiger hit the tv era just right based on the posts here. As a non golfer for many years, who did not really take much notice of golf, the one shot I remember seeing replayed more than any other was the Doug Sanders missed putt. I was not alive to see it originally but when sports shows show golf shots that is the one that stuck in my head. Sad that it was a miss that stuck but there you go.

The fact people are saying 'Tiger's chip' as if he only ever chipped it in once and everyone still knows which one is meant, confirms it for me. :D
I might suggest that one (perhaps the main) reason that many of us golfers know the 'Tiger chip', is that it's been shown endlessly whenever there is any golf coverage.

I'd be interested what non or infrequent golfers - and those who might watch the occasional major or RC - might think. They don;t watch golf all of the time - they won't have seen the 'Tiger chip' endlessly. But something might have stuck. Sandy's 7i perhaps?

We all have things that stick in our mind about news, sports and activities often of no normal or of little interest to us - and that thing that sticks becomes iconic as it comes to represent that news, activity or sport.

I have little or no interest in basketball - but when I think of basketball I think of one event - the USA vs Russia gold medal match of the 1972 Olympics - which in itself is of course an 'iconic' Olympics for very different and terrible reasons.

The other plus for Tiger's chip is the commentary that goes with it...

'Here it comes...
OH MY GOODNESS!
WOW! IN YOUR LIFE HAVE YOU EVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THAT?!'

Tigers chip in at the Masters for me. Its not just the shot, but the timing of it, and the reactions of Tiger and Steve. Did they ever get a high 5 right?

The other for me and one that never seems to get a mention is Tigers chip in on the 12th in the first round in 97 having gone over the back of the green. Paraphrasing slightly as I can't remember exactly what he said. Faldo said that shot was the one that changed the course of golf history.

Kaymer's putt to conclude the Miracle of Medinah springs readily to mind. Seve's Swiss expeditions which although not shown at the time has been replayed, even better with the caddy (was it Prdoger?) telliing the story

Gene Sarazen at Troon 1973 - age 71 - an iconic Open moment. Watching it makes me tingle...

And unlike the commentary on the Tiger chip - Henry Longhurst simply says "And what do you think about that one..." :)

If we are including failures, Tom Watson approach to 18th in the Open that Cink went on to win.
If only it had been good...... To win the Open at that age......

To this day I still can't can't believe how the rules officials allowed this to happen and more importantly Tiger stood by and let this happen.

You can guarantee Jack Nicklaus would have had more integrity than that.

Indeed. You can guarantee if you were out early with no fans you wee getting the same assistance. That was poor by Woods and crossed a line (even if the rule technically wasn't broken)

Fuss about nothing. All legit and I've been to lots of golf and us fans were all waiting for the golfers. I've also had people help me lift a log out of my way.

In my view it's legit if the player alone can move it.

Outside help like that is bollocks. Would they fans gave moved it for Monty in the states, I rather doubt it....
