Looks like your chipping is poor as you're not chipping close enough to be able to make the putts when you're missing greens.

Also you're not hitting enough greens. You should make it on some even from missed fairways.

Not one birdie in 3 rounds? Are you short off the tee? Is that why you're not hitting greens?
Im not short off the tee thats the one area im Ok with my driving. I average about 240 with driver and about 220/225 with 3 wood
its my 2nd shots and chipping thats letting me down, also i generally 2 putt

With 6 par 3's you're going to miss a lot of greens so i'd say chipping (and getting them close) is your No1 concern.

Here's the BEST and simplest chipping vid I've ever found...

Just put your hands past the ball. No real wrist action, no scooping, flicking or quitting or taking the club away around behind your knees... just put your hands past the ball.

(Don't tell Fundy I posted this as I don't want him to see it....) :p

How do you keep the stats? Just write them down on the scorecard? Download golflogix if you have an iPhone, it's a great free app that let's you keep track of all shots. Gives you a summary afterwards and tells you what to practice and how.

i like this video. ive had it in my favorites folder for quite some time. it might be good but its certainly not simple. hes showing this guy a spinning high chip pitch from say 15 yards with a lob wedge.

high tariff shot for someone who hasnt got all day to nail this technique. you will need a good lie, good technique, good ball and clean grooves to pull it off well and consistantly.

It's for all chips, only the loft of the club changes. I was working with an 18 h/capper last week and watched him hit a wedge from 40yds, two hops then stopped dead by the hole... came in from no more than 8ft high, he said normally that one would have been off the back of the green, I agreed... looked like it was going miles past :p To say he was excited would be an understatement, he was practically talking about being on the tour! LOL

It's about putting that punch/speed in at the bottom of the swing, thru the ball, without over-swinging. Agree about having a good ball though. It's just a reliable, repetitive action, no frills and it works great.

i was working on this shot at the end of last summer. when it works it was amazing. another thing is the state of the greens. if they arent receptive then you have no chance. into the wind helps also.

indeed i thought i was destined for the tour when i pulled these off!

i do think picking a landing zone and a little run out is tha safer play.

i played with a random 3 handicaper the other week and he was spinning his pitches like this. great to watch. apart from a few bombed drives it was this that really showed what he had in his locker.

If you are below the hole (into any kind of an upslope) you can stop them on a dime and practically pitch them 75% [or more] of the way to the hole (depending on what loft you use). If the green is sloping away then you can get them to check and release so you have to allow SOME roll,.... even pros don't tend to stop chips on downslopes :p

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!! Fundy woz 'ere! :smirk:

the day i spent a good hour mucking around on our 12th hole i was doing these spinning shots to a pin at the back of a green that slopes greatly from back to front. as you say i was nipping them more or less to the hole and getting them to stop amazingly quick. i was using my 56.

ill keep that in mind for uphill chips. downhill, i think ill pass for the meantime and just let gravity do what it does best!

A few links to different 'advanced' stats you might like to track

shotbyshot.com Driving Analysis

Long Game Efficiency Index
Count of all long game strokes divided by number of GIRs. Hitting all 18 GIRs at your course would score 1.66 (30 long-game strokes / 18 GIRs). Good for tracking how effective your long game is overall.

Strokes Gained-Putting (apologies this is a web archive link, PGA Tour seem to have moved their page)
Noting down how far your first putt is can be doubly beneficial because you can see how many putts you'd be expected to take from a given distance (you can't do the averaging-against-the-field bit of the calculation, but that doesn't mean you can't track how you're doing on the stat) and you can see how close you are getting your scramble attempts if you missed the GIR and were chipping/putting on.

Also useful to note is distance of made putts.

I always thought up and down is actually par - is it birdie then ?

Isn't an "up and down", just a scramble i.e making par or better when not hitting the GIR?

Regarding the OP, surely it's all about your chipping? Miss the green and you need to be able to chip close enough to have a decent chance at a one putt? Always comes down to chipping depressingly :)
