mobiles on the golf course

was paired up with someone i never played with before for a two man team matchplay and he spent the whole round either texting or checking the scores on the football. really began to annoy me after a while and i felt put off TBH.
anyone have a similar experience? i don't mind someone walking down the 18th calling for a lift home or up the the restaurant to put some food on for them but the while round is just ridiculous!

Nothing winds me up more on the course than someone using a mobile device...

Part of the appeal, for me, of playing golf is to be 'off the grid' for the duration of the round...

Stopped playing with my brother in law over his need to answer his 'phone, reply to texts etc whilst out on the course...

I flipping do! Mobiles are an evil we all have to live with but in certain situations they should stay in the bag.
If you need a pizza or lift home 3 more minutes isn't going to matter. Ring after the round simples.
 
I have my phone in my pocket during a round as I use it as a GPS rangefinder, but I would never take a call or text while playing.
 
I am usually 100% in the no mobile during play camp. However as a caveat, my mum is seriously ill in hospital at the moment and so my phone will definitely be on at Woburn in case the her condition worsens or the unthinkable happens. If you don't like that then tough and I make no apologies in this one case for doing so. Any other time and I'm with the the OP and think they should be used for emergencies only and texting, surfing etc is a big no no when playing particularly in a comp
 
I don't think mobiles should be used on-course for routine use, as they can be distracting or off-putting, and show a degree of disrespect to others on the course. However, I have to admit that mine is always on in my bag in case I get an emergency call-out, as happened today half-way down the seventh of our normal Sunday morning nine holes. And before anyone says that I shouldn't play when I am on-call, I am always on-call to a lesser degree and the golf makes up for it!
 
To be honest, I am not concentrating on my opponent only on his shots. I dont like people taking calls but txts and checking footy scores is fine I mean as long as it makes no noise what difference does it make. If I start getting annoyed at silent things then I know I have lost control of my game or I am trying to blame other things for my mistakes.

Normally I am with the OP but as in Martin's case, there are always exceptions.

BTW, I thought I read somewhere that smart phones were not to be used a GPS devices in competitive rounds due to them having certain apps that are deamed illegal.
 
Mine,s on silent in the bag , personaly i dont mind texting or anything quiet , taking a call (except emergency) is a big no no... as for been on the phone for all the round , if your that important to someone maybe you should be with them & not golfing
 
I can text a good bit on course somedays or even make a quick call from the trees. Even if i don't text or call I probably check every 45 mins or so. I don't really see a problem with it. I still talk and have a good bit of fun with my playing partners and I do try and keep any phone use away from them.

We'll all have them built into our heads soon so you won't even know I'm doing it!
 
Ok for emergency use I guess? But other than that a big no no. We managed before without them. Lets be honest no one is that important are they really? They only think they are. To those who think they are. Remember you spend 48 weeks of the year, trying to prove how indispensable you are. Then take holidays for a couple of weeks. To prove your not!
 
well, golf is pretty much sport of businessman, so you can not avoid sometimes phone calls. of course it's much nicer to leave the city and just relax, but we all know that sometimes it is simple impossible...
 
I ahve to be honest and say it doesnt bother me, i have enough problems with my own game to worry about others. i would agree no talking on the phone and the phone / keys on silent and it doesnt hold up play, i.e. dont text whilst its your turn.

Mine is always on but on vibrate and thankfully it was as my bairn had an accident and i had to leave everything sitting on the course and get to the hospital quick in my golf shoes etc, thankfully all was ok in the end but if i didnt have my phone on and something did happen.....in fact i dont want to think about that.

it was two days later i remebered that i had left my clubs on the course, thankfully these had been handed in.
 
Dont really have an issue with it. Golf is a social game and whilst playing I will often talk football with whoever im playing with, so if one of us checks the scores online, what is the problem with that? There isnt one as far as I'm concerned. I wouldnt make calls or answer any if it's a comp but friendly with mates is a different story. It's not like you'd be on it for all 4 hours!

People walk on different sides of the fairways sometimes if their balls go a different direction, so who am I to say someone on the otherside shouldnt check their phone or read a text?

As long as you dont make a noise there shouldnt be an issue.
 
I would say its rude to be using it all the time on the course, you should give your playing partners some respect, but I wouldn't mind someone taking an important call or quickly answering a text, and obviously in cases like Homers its a necessity, I have it on silent in my bag, and normally won't check it in a round
 
If only we could put the more vociferous players that seem to be at every club on 'silent' once in a while....
