Mixed foursomes - 50% handicap

OK, I am not a fan of any aspects of the congu handicaps system as whole but I can understand, for example, 7/8th handicap for better ball comps i.e. you get a cut in the handicap because you are taking the better score of the two players.

I am playing in a mixed foursomes comp and the rules are 50% of the difference of the combined handicaps i.e. add the handicaps of each pair, deduct the lower number and we get 50% of what remains. Can anyone explain the rational in that? Why when there is just one ball and one score (i.e. it’s not a better ball) do we only get 50% of the handicap?

How does playing one ball entitle you to two handicaps. Or put another way 100% of the difference could result in you receiving 56 shots.

2 x players off 20 = 40.

What's fair? half of 20 (10) or all twenty.

I can see what you are saying and on the face of it, it looks reasonable but . . . . if I, off 20 was playing the chap off 10, I would get 10 shots. Now in game senario you present, I am playing him with 10 shots but he has the advantage of a partner playing off 20 and I have the disadvantage of a partner playing off 30 - so how is that fair?

In the scenario presented by RGDave it is either 20 shots or half 20 shots. I suggest that half 20 shot (10) places me at an unfair disadvantage as that is the difference between him and me yet now I am he has the advantage of a 20HC partner and I the burden of a 30HC partner - how is that fair?

Ah but..

Team A 2 x players, one off 10 and one off 26 = 36.
v's
Team B 2 x players, one off 6 and one off 14 = 20.

Difference is 16 so strokes allowed = 8 for Team A
Remember it's alternate shot format, it evens itself out and the method of working out strokes is fairly accurate IMO

Pick your partner more carefully

If you off 20 are playing alternate shot with your partner off 10, would you expect to go round in approx 15 over, or 30 over?

Better ball is 3/4 btw
