Missed putt mistakenly picked up in medal comp

Hi.... help with the following appreciated..

Playing in the club monthly medal I missed a short putt, and in frustration, thinking I was in a stableford and couldn’t score, picked up my moving ball with the back of the putter. I immediately realised my mistake, but didn’t know how to rectify it..... should I have retaken the putt under penalty of two shots? As the ball hadn’t stopped moving I couldn’t place it at its new resting point. In the end I just put in a non return and so was dq’d.

Rule 11.2 covers this scenario. A two shot penalty and you ignore the shot just played and replace your ball on its original
spot

If it was a qualifier your handicap record would have credited you with a net double bogey.
