metal spikes or plastic discuss!!!!!

I have metal in the shoes i use in winter. Liked the grip they gave much better than plastic. Have to say i couldnt really see it caused and damage as such. when my spikes wear in my Ecco's mite swap to metal full time as a few of they guys i play with still have metal as well.

I don't know about causing more grief to the greens but I do like the idea of having a pair of metal spiked shoes for the winter or for when we get a month of solid rain which causes your course to resemble a bog more than a golf course.

That being said, all these plastic spikes nowadays are tried and tested on so many different varieties of ground so I'm happy enough to wear soft spikes in the winter, maybe just get a new set just in case, it's much cheaper.

in terms of pure grip there is a lot of variation between the different models of 'soft spike'

if you really need the extra grip on safety grounds the course should be closed, but having said that the odd spike mark on the greens in those conditions isn't going to make a whole lot of difference!

generally the issue with metal spikes is the creation of spike marks on the greens rather than course damage, they (metal) clearly do produce them, and soft spikes don't. as a fellow competitor I am inevitably going to be miffed if I find a group of them 2ft from the hole on my line, in the same way as I would be miffed if I found my ball in a footprint in a bunker, or in a fresh deep divot hole when the divot is clearly visible a few feet in front etc etc

they are probably a bigger H&S risk in the summer for twisted knees and ankles than they are a saviour in the winter too.

I use Champ Pro-Stingers in the Winter.
A plastic cleat with a metal spike in the middle - great grip and they don't clog.
Others I play with wear cleats all year and I've seen them slip.
Nothing's perfect but I feel metal is better in the Winter.
Back to cleats in the Summer shoes now.

What are playing, ice golf?

Biggest issue I have with metals is the people that can't walk properly and scrape the green with their shoes. Big scrapes in the green are a dreadful thing to see.

I use metal by defaut and change if I'm asked to.

They grip better, are easier to clean and last a bit longer.

Downside, they're noisy and probably not as comfortable.

I prefer Pro Champ stingers in the winter. Just feels more solid underfoot particularly if the ground is a tad frosty. I always try and be careful on the greens as I'm acutely aware that I could cause a problem if I drag my feet. Actually its a good excuse to not do the flags as I'm trying to protect the green ;)

I must admit I prefer the plastic spikes for both summer and winter. Plus they're quiet ! Back in the days when everyone wore metal spikes it sounded like the Wehrmacht on the march on stone paths.
