Memberships in Hampshire / Surrey

I just opened the Hampshire map on Golfshake and with little local knowledge, have to say, I'd have a look at Hartley Wintney - looks like an okay course. Also, it appears that Tylney Park is offering a 1 month trial membership. I also noted that you live near many great, but quite expensive courses..... Anyway, I can't afford a membership myself, over here in the Netherlands a membership at a half decent club/course is too dear for me. I do really enjoy being flexible though. I play at four or five local courses, including municipal ones. Looking at your area, the only membership I could afford would be at Alton Golf Club - and that's taking 'your area' with a pinch of salt..

You write that you are on a waiting list already, why not enjoy the nomadic life until you spot comes through? Play all the courses local to you, and keep track of which you enjoy - that may lead to becoming a member at a club you really fall in love with!
Tylney Park, is a muddy bog in the winter

Out of interest any courses you recommend around that part of Hampshire?

I looked at Tylney park as its only 20mins from where I live, but wasn’t overly impressed with the feel of the place, I’m looking for somewhere with a proper club feel and I went on a wet day earlier in the summer and it seemed to not drain to well then! Plus the membership seemed a little off ish can’t put my finger on why but something felt off.

Question related to the OP's query: is UKP 2000 - 2500 a pretty standard '7-day' membership fee in South West England? I am comparing it to some membership fees I saw quoted in Fife for example.

No in South West England 1100-1700 is the going rate.
In South East England the rate range is far wider.

I was a member at Tylney until a couple of years ago - interesting course but gets v wet and the investment company that owns it didn't want to spend any money on really improving it. It COULD be a really good course otherwise. Someone has said that it is a bit clicky there and you are right.
The Army is near to you and is another nice course - however, there are no tee booking facilities, so you just have to turn up. This didn't really work for me unless I got there very early on Saturday morning as there are 3 or 4 roll-ups that go out & they have block booked these times - you could potentially get in with one of those though.
I did look at Farnham but as SILH has said, the waiting list is huge, so I am now at Windlesham, which (I think) has a nice interesting course and also has tee booking facilities. It is a bit more expensive though being where it is and it does have a reputation as being wet in the winter but I was there last winter and after having played at Tylney (& Sherfield Oaks) in previous winters, it was no-where close to being as wet as either of those two course. From talking to the other members, it did used to be very wet but they did a huge amount of drainage work about 5 years ago, which they say have improved it significantly.
Happy to guest but Saturday is the only really option day for me

We've just bought in Bentley (between Farnham and Alton). I've played with a friend at Worldham a couple of times and a decent, interesting course - probably a bit far for you though.

I'm waiting on seeing if/when Blacknest opens up again (should be Autumn '25), hopefully no waitlist and fees wont be extreme.

Alternatively, I was also looking at Hurtmore as an option.

Worldham is a nice course but gets very wet and boggy in the winter.

Blacknest I believe will only open with 12 holes as part of the future of golf where 12 is seemed to be the perfect number.

Hurtmore isn't taking on new members for 7 day memberships. Course isn't that challenging either. Small membership there and normally have two competitions a month for weekdays and then two on the weekend

I had heard similar about Tylney, shame they’re investment company owned now which sadly is a turn off. I do have fond memories of the course from my junior days, one of my friends was a member so played there a few times. Also happened to get married at Tylney hall!

Really great info re Windlesham, it is right on my doorstep but i don’t think I’ve ever played there, from my initial research it’s definitely high on my list. Would love to take you up on the offer of a round - will drop you a DM, thanks very much
