Wow! Google maps is surprisingly accurate, just measured a few drives from yesterday that I happen to know the distances and it was practically spot on.... yes I realise that's how it's supposed to work!!! but thought it mightn't be so good.

They were all just over 400yds :D

Thats not bad for a 7 iron

I love the google earth option. I have the bushnell V2 rangefinder and have checked the yardages on the maps and always found the tool to be accurate. As on a previous thread I always check a course using Google Earth to get a feel for it.

I was at the driving range last night, waiting for the next 'how to hit a shank' installment. While waiting, I thought I would zap the target pins with my bushnell, and check the accuracy. Now this may be because it was a bit dark, but I got the following results:

100 = 95
150 = 135
170 = 155
200 = 180
235 = 200

Back fence about 235.

Pretty short then.

But, I hit an 5 iron to the 170, which means I only hit a 5 iron 155. Out on the golf course this is a 7 iron. I know the balls are not as good, but this is rubbish. I am only hitting my driver 190 odd. I might not be the longest hitter out there, but I am better than that. I hope, anyway.

Yeah but add back the 10-15% that the crap balls lose and you're not a million miles off your yardages - your 155 yard 5 iron turns into 175 - job done....

How did the "Shanks'R'Us" session go..?

About a year ago I went up the Aylesbury Golf Centre Cow Field Driving Range, it was hammering it down and we were the only people there

I whipped out my Skycaddie and measured the distances and they were all well short, Im not sure if they are compensating for the fact that they are using range balls, But personally, I would like the yardages to be accurate

And yes, i've found Google Earth to be a useful tool

Fragger

Our pro & I checked his Bushnell against my trusty surveyors wheel (old tech but accurate!!), he was anything up to ten yards out over 150yds, this was on a flat practice area. Your figures seem to bear this out.

I whipped out my Skycaddie - thank God, I thought you were going to say something else...

Mind you I wish we had their driving range... at least we could warm up properly before a game.

Yep, I used Google earth to produce a yardage chart for my course a good few years ago now. It is very accurate. If anyone is sceptical, try measuring a 100m lane at any proper atheltics track. You'll find the error is well less than 0.5%, much better than GPS or Laser. Admittedly not quite as convenient, but for your own course can be really useful.....and free.

The bushnell is meant to be plus minus one yard.

I have compared it to the results from my sky caddie, and I think it is pretty accurate. So either the range is hopelessly wrong, or, it doesn't work in poor light conditions. Probably a combination of the two.

Lesson went ok imurg, still going to be a lot of hard work, as I am trying to unlearn 20 years of doing it wrong. It has a lot of potential though. I can already see improvements. But i may need to get my 6i re chromed. The hozel looks a bit battered.

Good Hunting Murph - it's not something I could give the time to.
Even if my swing's rubbish and has more moving parts than than I care to think about, it's what I've got and for the most part it works reasonably so I'm sticking with it.

In the last three weeks I have spent 19 hours practicing. I have hit several thousand golf balls. Shanked most of them too. If and when these changes take effect, I will have a much better, and more constant swing, and it will all have been worth it. My bad shots will not be anything like as bad as before, and hopefully this will lead to a lower handicap.

I can see why this is not for everyone though.

is this a download version your talking about chaps? I remember looking at it before but for golf courses it didnt want to zoom in close enough
