As part of my work as a course rater I need to measure the distance from various tees. The only technology I have is a laser range finder and a Shotscope V3 watch. The former is great at measuring distances across fairways or to obstructions and the later is great at measuring distances to the green. However, I need something that can set a point on the tee and then measure a point to a landing zone. Has anyone got experience of a good device to use please.

PS I know I can estimate the distance by taking the measured hole and subtract the distance to the green but it's not that accurate and a pain compared with just reading a device.

Does the watch not have ability to measure the distance of your last shot? I.e. how far from the tee you now are?

EDIT From: https://v3support.shotscope.com/hc/... across until you see,ve walked on the screen.

GPS mode:

To access the measure last shot feature during your round in GPS + Track mode please follow the steps below:

*Unlock the screen

*Press the top left button to access the menu

*Scroll across until you see the 'Last Shot' option and select it by pressing the top right button.
*To start measuring the shot push the top right to start the countdown.
*The watch will show the distance you've walked on the screen. The screen will lock and return to the main screen.

*Walk to your ball and then navigate back to the Last Shot screen when you arrive at your ball.
*If you want to measure a new shot, press the top right button to re-set the counter.

Thank you so much - will try it ASAP as I have never used that before.

Measure backwards with the laser rather than forwards i.e. from bunker to tee rather than tee to bunker. Leave something suitable on the tee eg a white post. I use the fixed distance maker on the tee if it is suitable, for my own yardage chart.

Well, the thread title does say "distance walked" not distance yet to be walked.

I seem to remember that my club owned one of those wheels back in the 1970s.

Do you remember at school we had those wheels on a stick whose circumference was 1 yard with a clicker on the outside so it made a noise after each revolution?

Get one of those.

Here to help. 😃
We were still using one with the the old greens manager in the early 2010s.

The PGA Champions Tour measure distances using a laser (not slope adjusted) and put an alignment stick with a reflector on the top at various points (eg, centre of fairway, permanent marker in fairway, front of green) to facilitate the laser measurements. The reflector is one of those red ones, about three inches in diameter. Very effective, particularly if there are two people, one with the reflector and another with the laser.

The only accurate way to do it. GPS accuracy varies from one device to another.

Unless you have GPS kit like Skycaddie use, then this wheel is probably the best way to do it.

Can be used in all weathers as well, however, it must be calibrated! I was involved with getting a half marathon course certified by UK Athletics and the bloke that came to certify/measure the course turned up with a measuring wheel and walked the route.

A lot of people forget civilian GPS is only accurate to 5-10 metres.

I've got a couple for sale if any one wants one. Only downside is that they are quite modern and measure in this new fangled Metric thing.

I think 5yds is the general belief.

10m sounds quite a magnitude of difference, that I'm not sure any manufacturer would agree with.
When teaching Service Personnel how to use GPS equipment wre would give them a basic understanding of the differences between Civilian and Military GPS Systems.

Clear skies the positional error could be up to 5 metres, built up areas or wooded areas, it could be up to 20 metres.

That’s wihy Skycaddie tends to be the best on the market as they physically walk the courses and use specialized GPS equipment, the down side being the cost they charge.

When we rated courses, we went out in twos or threes and laser measured against each other. A bit like an experienced/skillful foursome pair, one teeing off and the other up the fairway.

My skills at measuring distance do not seem to be failing with old age and not playing for over 7 years.
My wife walks at least a mile a day and nearly always asks me how far we have walked..

500 and 750 yards or a mile+ I am surprisingly accurate.
ie, today we were walking along Ayr seafront and I got asked.
Threequarters of a mile I said and then remembered that the esplanade has a unique Scots mile walk with marked posts
I was only a few yards out

I sometimes wonder how today's young golfers would play without their measuring equipment.

I practice walking on the joints in the pavement ( old 3’ ones)
It’s quite hard and you need a bit of pace to do it.
Does help if you have to pace anything out.

No different to us old enough to remember when there were no yardage books even - make your own yardage book, it was what Jack Nicklaus did and it was his inspiration that started it.

As previously said having a GPS unit made me realise I do not walk a yard but there again my iron distances were based upon walking distances.
