Theres no doubting his talent and I want to like his on course golf persona, but it's the small but important things that annoy me, could just be me though but I grew up with the humbling, respectful and courteous attitudes of Watson, Nicklaus, Player, Palmer, Seve etc etc.
Watching Mcilroy walk past all his adoring fans and blanking them just doesn't sit well with me.
It's not just Mcilroy though, I've witnessed Garcia destroy an adoring young boys smiling face whom Garcia was signing his autograph book, when Garcia threw it over his head to land in the dirt outside the ropes and a Marshal had to retrieve it.
C'mon guys, you're professionals living our dream and we are all in awe of your talent and lifestyle, surely it isn't too much to ask to just acknowledge your fans a bit more and make us feel we're supporting not just a guy who plays golf but an elite who's humble enough to acknowledge we exist and we adore everything they do.

I expect many to totally disagree with this and I welcome other views, it's just an observation that actually fits many of today's sportsmen, it just so happens it was Mcilroys behaviour today that sparked it off. Who knows though how any of us would react with all that attention, but there are many many examples of the elite who have an exemplary attitude, I just hope that some of that will rub off on the new elite.

i understand what you are saying but he may go back and sign them in a bit,but we'll never know.

tiger did this after his 2nd rnd at the chevron,he walked past them all, signed his card then came back out and started signing hats, magazines etc.you could hear him having a chat with them aswell so that was good to see.

i don't think mcilroy is always like this if he was completely ignoring them,he has been seen many times to be signing autographs and a lot of them.

I agree with what ur saying. If i took my son to watch and asked for autograph for him and the player walked past i wud be quiete annoyed. Its gentlemans/womans game.No place for ignorance.Coming back out shows arrogance as if to say im the important one u'll wait for me to decide when i sign autographs.Come on guys its not a football field.

If you are referring to him as he walked off 18 then yes I am afraid you are talking total bollocks.

The most important thing in his mind is to go and sign and check his card and ensure that he has done everything to make sure he has indeed one.

No doubting he would do signings etc after the presentation.

You also conveniently manage to omit from your whinge the fact he stood on the last and applauded the fans and also praised how their support spurred him on today.

Another 'Let's knock a winner' thread.....what a surprise.

Being from N.I. im elated with Rorys win but it only takes 2seconds to sign an autograph and make some kids day.As been posted too its not just Rory but other golfers also. Not a case of Knockin a winner.

Come on fellas. You're making judgements without all the facts. Rory is usually pretty good with the spectators. And claiming that it only takes a couple of seconds conveniently forgets the fact that it ant just one autograph being signed. It's usually hundreds. The crowd in HK have been fantastic and very vocal. They have also all been following Rory. You don't know how much effort he has made so lay off and celebrate another fantastic win for rods.

His round isn't even finished until he has left the scorer's hut having checked and signed his card. Using the OP theory, perhaps he should be high fiving spectators on the way down the 1st fairway too!?

What a bad way to start the day with a moaning at a winner post - poor form.

Its not that hard to sign an autograph.I make sure i sign 2 after every hole.Dunno why my parents want my Signature 18 times twice a week but i cudnt say no.lol.:D

I never mentioned 'signings' and if you read the whole post you'll understand, thanks for your comment though.

It's not meant as an attack at a winner, its the bigger picture if you re-read it, however, I did expect the Rory fans to defend even though it's an observation and not an attack, I would do the same no doubt at one of my heros. Thanks for participating though.

As it was just an observation and not a moan, then you would have noticed him with his hands out on both sides of the line of people doing low fives.

BTW, I'm not a fan of Rory, or any other golfer in particular, I just admire what these guys are capable of doing.

Sorry re read reveals no mention of 'signings' but does mention blanking which he did not do so to sum it up you are indeed talking out your backside.;)

Rors can do no wrong in my book and has always been great with crowds. And with Westwood tearing up the Ned Bank and Tiger showing flashes of his old self its been a great weekenf of Pro golf and mouth watering for next season. :D

It's common for most golfers to pass on any signings until they've sorted out their card. They then usually go back out ando the fan stuff after. He hasn't finished until his cards signed and in, it's an important part of the comp to ensure he does it correctly, being delayed and distracted by fans could lead to errors. Best get the card sorted first it's not not ignoring them

that pretty much sums up what i was trying to say.....

Agree with the sentiments that any signings, high five's, interviews, spectator interaction, should be done after the round is completed. Ie card signed.

Think the organisors of the events need to do more to stop spectators 'Harassing' the players until all the formalities are completed.

It does look bad when you see players making their way to the tents and they ignore fans, but that is the way it is, there are more important things to get done first.

I have to agree that Rory's first job is to get in, get the card checked and signed. I don't think I've seen any players from Seve, Nicklaus etc up to the modern day where they will stop and sign before they get to the scorers hut. Once the formalities are done they will normally do an autograph session. Many have a grea reputation for spending a long period of time after the presentation doing this. I don't think McIlroy was being disrespectfuly but he was still in work mode.
