Matchplay!

Could he though?

I guess to move from 39 points to 40 points basically requires one less shot from a high handicap golfer... so yeah that sounds doable

Whereas I think the low handicap guy would have to take 4 less shots to move from 39 to 40 stableford points! A much tougher ask
Erm, I must be missing something in your post. To go from 39 to 40 points require just one less shot (on a scoring hole) for all handicaps.

Anyway I was simply pointing out that 39 pts is not a great score for a 20 handicappers, as they have a much better chance of having a great day and scoring a lot better than 39 ... the last 20 handicapper having a great day that I saw scored 46 pts!

That's generally an improving golfer, and good scores are to be expected as their handicap can't keep up.

A stable 20 handicapper will rarely have an outstanding game and their average points tally will be much lower than a Cat 1 players, so the Cat 1 will usually win in matchplay.

possibly, but try giving away 20 plus shots to someone

I played a vets scratch Matchplay yesterday and shook hands on the 11th at 4 over gross - I played a medal today and came off the 11th after 57 blows ! This was my worst medal score in years and I was nadgered from over golfing, but 1 day can make the difference!

Fair play for playing two matches in a day Delc, not sure I would have done that , a touch of fatigue going down the last perhaps?

I had a 3 1/2 hour break between the matches, and I felt fine during the second match. Just played a poor 2nd shot at the last hole which was nothing to do with tiredness.

Yeah sorry, poor attempt at sarcasm, just thought a couple of posts were suggesting there was a disparity between the task facing golfers of different handicap ;)

I played my first round last night and got beat...BUT, I actually played ok for once. The lad I played was nice and chatty. I had chances to win, but never took them. He was one up on 17th a monster par five, (longest in Staffs) We both parred it. Par five to finish, we both birdied it. I was chuffed to bits. Next year I think I'll be ready just need to gather up some points ones. :D
