Matchplay question, extra holes & h/cap

I seem to remember where a match went to playoff holes the first hole was changed to #9 on stroke index regardless of what number it is.
After first hole it was as normal.

Could have misheard though anyone confirm or not?.

Sorry. Load of rubbish. What happens if the match carries on and you get to the "real" SI 9 hole?

Think this is based on if you are giving him a shot " even if it's only one" then he is a high handicapper compared to you.

Have heard this before but only in jest.

In my regular four I am the high capper off six.
1-5-5 plus me.

i was joking as usually as soon as a low handicap posts about giving shots away they get pounced on by high handicaps as moaning etc.


So i'll give you the benefit of the doubt but in my experience of the courses i play regularly of which every single one the first hole is SI10 or higher. so by that reasoning you will be getting 10 shots or more, unless of course he's playing a plus 5 handicap.

A prime reason for clubs to follow the guidance on Stroke Index allocation as shown in Appendix G of the CONGU manual. It is patently ridiculous to have SI 1 on the first hole.

H'mm! Not 'patently ridiculous', but would certainly be questionable/need to be justified! Smply being 'the hardest hole on the front 9 to par' isn't sufficient!

A previous club's 2nd hole is SI 2, which has been a struggle for me more than once when giving shots! Relatively simple hole to bogey, but difficult (for me) to par - at least off the whites! Yellow tees, used for Senior comps/matches, makes the SI more appropriate, at least for me!

Probably more likely than the other alternative, where the first hole just happens to be the cutover point, where it's the most likely hole (on the front 9) where an extra shot would mean that the hole is halved!

Index 1 and 2 should be about the middle of each half.

Holes 1 and 18 should be about index 9 and 10.

It should be remembered that the suggestion is that a club should have two cards, one for match play and one for all other forms of play.

We did it when it first came out but an awful lot of members could not get their heads around the idea.

As we play an awful lot more Stableford comps, as well as all the swindles playing it, at our course than matches it was decided to have just one card with SIs based upon difficulty. We are lucky however in that we have a fairly well balanced course and the SI s fit in reasonably well with the concept of having SI set for matchplay.

I believe so. Where the individual player needs them ie based on difficulty.
Golf Australia have ruled that all courses have a match and a stableford index for the reasons discussed.
