After winning our Senior Open in the h/c section and at last getting a cut to 20h/c i was talking to my next opponent in singles matchplay who was bemoaning the fact he would have to give me 8 shots (hes a 12 h/c).

I have been shooting around 91 the last 6 games. But on the 8 holes i get a shot on him i think its unlikely i will win all these holes, so on the other 10 holes a 12 h/c v a 20h/c i think the lower h/c should have a good chance of winning most of these holes. Therefore i dont understand his pessimism.

Is this a fair point? or am i just looking at this from a mid to high h/c point of view, would be interested to hear from some lower h/cs on this.

Well done Bruv on your great win and the cut
I know you've been playing well lately so not surprised.

As for your last question - can't answer that one, 'cos I'm a high handicapper  :D :D

Golfmmad.

Some people just like to moan.

I think it's been proven that matchplay still favours the low player something like 55-45 even with full allowance.

Sounds like you have the upper hand even before the match has started. Good luck with it. :)

Don't worry about his moaning. No-one likes giving shots away. Just play your own game and don't give him any easy holes.

Someone posted a link to some myths about handicaps on the CONGU website which was great. You can find it here.

Even with a full difference in handicap as you're playing the low capper has a 55% of winning, you have a 45% chance. Those are official CONGU stats.
He therefore has no right to complain (unless you're a bandit? ;))

He's got no reason to complain, unless his game is off form and you are Mr. Steady.
I never fall on either side of the fence on this but if you both play to h'cap you will lose, because you don't get 4/4 h'cap....therefore, the "odds" are stacked in his favour. Give him a spanking and then beat him on the golf course.

Thanks to all for words of encouragement.

Have to agree the lower h/c should have a slight advantage, but i have been playing well and going to play my normal game plus a bit of confidence.Dont mind if i lose as long as the game is played in the right spirit.

good luck mate, I enjoy playing when I get to play against a low handicaper as it makes me play better, dont know the reasoning behind it but always play better agains a better player.
ps - the random number member has posted the same comment on all his posts :D

Hes lost the game already.
I as a 12 handicapper played a 20 handicapper tonight in our m/play and defeated him 3 & 2, but i took the simple approach of taking it one shot at a time and now worrying about where or when he was getting shots.

Giving 8 shots to an opponent means there are 10 holes where he does not get a shot.

You play your game and let him worry about you.
