This week I played in a team match play event and was up against a woman. I was the lower handicap and was giving her shots. Before we started we allocated the shots against the ladies SI, which in some cases was quite different to the SI on the men's tees. The next day at work, this was questioned saying we should have used the men's SI, which is correct?

Also, a couple of the holes were par 4 for me and par 5 for my opponent, were we correct in making the winner of these holes against the par ie, bogey beats double, as opposed to purely the number of strokes taken?

These queries didn't affect the overall score of the match but just wondering for future reference.

cheers

doesn't matter - you may use either but it's recommended to use the ladies SIs

no, par is irrelevant and effectively a factor of SI on a hole by hole basis in many cases so it's taken care of in the handicapping.

edit - you did adjust handicaps based on the relevant SSS of the tees being played didn't you? reading your post again I wonder if you missed that step?

as an example if you played of the yellows at an SSS of 71 and she was off the red tees with 73 then you would add 2 shots to her handicap, calculate the difference and allocate those against the ladies SI indexes.

finally, if you didn't then don't worry - it's all over now and too late to do anything about it. honest mistakes on handicapping 'stand' once the result is decided/posted.

Thanks for the first reply, makes sense but on the 2nd point, if it was a par 4 for me and a par 5 for the lady and we both got 5,no shots given, would it be a half or would my opponent win the hole as she had a par and I had a bogey?

half - par is irrelevant

and see edit above...

I have played several matches against men, and as Duncan says, you first need to adjust the handicaps depending on the SSS of the course, if the ladies SSS is higher than she gets additional shots, if its the other way round the man gets them.

it is recommended that the person receiving shots uses their stroke index but I have played the other way around too.

The league rules state max playing handicap of 21 for men and 27 for ladies. My opponent was higher than 27 but only allowed to play off 27 so would the extra shots have been added? We had forgot about this

Yes because it's a function of the course and tees being used rather than the player's handicap BUT that doesn't mean that the league hasn't imposed a different interpretation!

The process is pretty simple really....

Adjust Handicap Difference (shots given) for any difference in SSS - as described above.
Decide which 'Card' you are playing to (Ladies of Mens). According to convention or as specified in the Condotions of Comp.

Simply play the course using the SI of the chosen card to allocate shots where appropriate.

As Duncan states, Par is irrelevant. It's the scores, taking shots into consideration, that matter!

If there's a max handicap for the comp and one player is above that, then they play as if the max handicap is their playing handicap.

So, if I have got it right (probably not though):
max playing handicap for women is 27 so my opponent is playing off 27, I am off 21 so she gets 6 shot on ladies SI 1-6. But SSS for women is 73 against 71 for men so she gets shots on SI 7 and 8 as well?

Thanks for clarifying the bit about a Men's Par 4 being a women's par 5.
Mr Mimms and I usually play matchplay when the two of us are playing and we have always played it "against par". So I've claimed a lot of wins and halfs that should have been halfs and losses!
I might owe him a lot of washing-up!
