If you were a great wedge player you wouldn't need 4 wedges and you certainly wouldn't be off of 28. My own opinion is that you don't need 4 wedges, but you could also drop one of 5w/3h or 5h/5i. In fact, off of 28, you could probably drop the driver and use the 3w instead.

i use to play 3 wood off the tee however my driver now 7/10 finds fairway . 3/10 first cut. Prob worth noting not all 28 handicappers are hackers.

gw sw and lw are my main wedges really the pw is 43 degree so it's hardly a wedge more a 9 iron

Well I don't know you and I don't want to sound rude, but guys who can hit 70% of fairways and have great wedge games don't play off of 28 - period.

If it were me, I'd start by dropping the lob wedge.

finding fairway isn't the problem it's distance I don't generate the power

never once said I had great wedge game I said I aim to improve my wedge game and become a great wedge player because adding distance is hard but improving stats from 100 yards and in is easier. That's where you make the most shots

Apologies, I didn't read the "am" your your post as "aim", my mistake. That said, becoming a great wedge player doesn't require multiple wedges, it requires practice, and I still maintain that you don't need a lob wedge to be a great wedge player. Also, to be a great wedge player you need a consistent swing, which again requires practice (and coaching)

That's my aim this winter to improve the wedge play and swing. I'll keep the 58 degree tho because it's such a lovely club. Was spinning it back nicely this morning at the range landing it past the pin (70 yards) then spinning back to 2 foot which was nice to see. Need to bring that too the course

You seem to have a lot of game for a 28 handicapper ;)

Its all in the mental game and I think thats what lets me down..

for example I went on a golf holiday this year.. day 1.. first half poor.. second 9 cracking 21 points.. next day 21 points first half.. rubbish second half.. 3rd day I put a good game together all way round.. last day awful for the lot

im my own worst enemy

Paul:

Obviously I cannot see your game but if you have that kind of control with a wedge but are only hitting a 5 wood 170 yards, unless you have some physical issues, there is something very weird going on in your golf game to still be a 28 handicapper especially hitting 70% of fairways.

I have a suggestion...go and play a few rounds with whatever driving club you feel comfortable with, a hybrid for long shots, a mid iron, a short iron, maybe a couple of wedges and a putter. I have to think that maybe with as many as 14 clubs that you probably do not have great distance control over, lets go to a minimalist approach and see if your scores improve just by simplifying your club selection. You may be surprised how well it works.

If I could chip like I do at the range on the course I really think I could be off 18 in no time.. 100 yards and in is where I let myself down constantly

That's not a mental issue, it's amateur golf.

A lot of shots within 100 yards, what ones are the most troubling?

I would say between 40-70 yards are the most troubling, Thats why Im practicing choking down on my gap wedge and learning to take something off the shot

Remember you can also pitch and run with an 8,9 or PW from that distance if the terrain allows.

normally pitch and run with an 8, has saved me a lot of shots but I would like to be able to get up and down from 100 yards

However if an amateur golfer improved the mental side of their game you could almost guarantee their golf would improve

So have you actually identified the 'mental issues' you had on the poor 9s/round?

Or was it simply a case of playing some poor shots - which can certainly happen - and not handling that well (a mental issue in itself!).

That said, it's often the case that there's too much (generally destructive) thoughts about bad shots.

I am working on keeping it cool, if I have a bad shot take the medicine put the ball in a safe position then try to still score.. rather than right ive had a pen lets land this one next to the pin.. my last round I went in the water just off the green.. took my medicine and just walked off with a point on that hole rather than a blob

I've been watching this thread with a mixture of amusement and confusion.

On the basis of what you have posted, if you got down in an average of 3 shots from 100yds you would be off 18 easily; slam dunk.

Suggest you start with this as an objective before bringing it down to a 2 shot target!
