to keep inside the 14 club (outdated) rule on clubs in the bag I am currently facing a dilemma of what club to ditch for now ..

I play the following.. Driver, 3 wood, 5 wood, 3 hybrid, 5 hybrid, 5 - PW, 50 , 54 , 58 degree.. and obviously a putter.

I dont want to touch the wedges as Im delighted with them at the moment.

Driver im happy with

5 wood is my best club

putter cant be dropped lol

I narrowed it down to 5 iron, 3 or 4 hybrid

headed to the range hit 10 balls with each.. all dead straight and decent distance.. (new 5 iron performing well.. havent hit a 5 iron in about a year)

it looks like the 3 wood will be placed in the spare bag for now then

do others rotate their clubs to suit the course?

Get a 4 wood and sell the 3 and 5 :-)

I sometimes rotate for winter versus summer (put a hybrid in for winter rough) but usually the bag is the same.

I don't see any need for more than 14 clubs. How close is your 3 hybrid to your 5 wood? In my experience, the lofts are pretty similar so in reality you could probably do without one of those.

I agree ditch the 3 wood. if you were not in love with the 5 wood, I second Amanda's suggestion. A 4 wood of 16/17 degrees of loft is ideal.

5 Wood has sentimental value aswell as my wife got it for me on our first anniversary when we got together.. I hit one shot with it and since then its just been my favourite.. whenever I am having a bad game I know I can go to that club off the tee or off the deck and get my round back on track

Outdated? Who seriously needs more than 14 clubs
Its an outdated rule in the sense that it was brought in for caddys at a time when clubs were heavier and they limited the numbers to protect the caddies. I wouldnt mind being able to carry 16 clubs personally.. keep the 15 I got an add a further wedge for control.

I dont see how people can include chippers in their 14 clubs because what a waste

You need 5 wedges? Seriously? Wow.

Learn to hit 3/4 and 7/8 shots and the gaps diminish, that what I did

another good point.. dont want this to turn into a 3/4 shot or loft discussion like on my pitching wedge loft thread lol Im getting better at those shots

however it is always great to have a shot thats X yards and you know which clubs goes X yards and you can just swing normally and Know its going to make it perfectly

when we played a texas scramble in my society my boss took my drive on one hole (even tho it was shorter than the others) because he liked the distance as he could take a full wedge.. he did.. put it next to the flag and I finished it off for a birdie

In which case definitely keep the 5 wood in the bag! How much further does it go than a 3H?

Exactly why I think the pros, and may be us average players should be limited to 10 clubs, and not 14. Bring back shot making to golf, rather than being on the number all the time.

hard to tell.. 5 wood averages 170 .. 3 hybrid can be anything from 170-200.. im just getting used to hitting it again.. no good off the rough only fairway but when im far off the green its useful to have

Consdiering my driver goes 210 id say it's the operator not the club .can hit the 5 wood very well out of a fairway bunker 170 aswell. Very useful

Paul:

Another way of looking at this may be to record over the next five rounds the frequency you use each club and just remove the club you use the least?

From your distances, I would guess the par 4's over 415 more or less play as par 5's for you. Do you ever choose to play them that way (not sure of your handicap?) Those kind of decisions can also help you decide what clubs are more valuable!

In my society I'm 28, on mygolfonline I'm 26/25 just can't get cut on society days your right I play them as par 5s I play all holes as a par 5 then I'd hit 90 and be chuffed. 93 is my best so far.

Because my distance lacks I am to be a great wedge player as that's where I make up my scores
