One of this year's men's majors went to a play-off whilst a second almost, and probably should have, gone to a play-off. Which do you think is the best way of settling such prestigious events?

For me, it is the multi hole format used by the Open and the USPGA. Sudden death is a little too random whilst 18 holes the following day is a bit of an anti-climax.

Sudden death every time

We havnt separated two or more players after 4 days so lets sort the winner out with the minimum extra play required, also at the current pace of play we cant afford 3-4 hole pay offs due to losing light as the schedules are set for TV prime time not to have and hour or 2 of daylight remaining after Sunday regular play

Sudden death for me.

By the time the last player in has signed his card, all players concerned have been driven back to the playoff hole tee, drawn lots and gone through their extended PSR, it takes too long anyway.

Multi hole playoff.

The tournament is based on a set number of holes and so, in my opinion, should be the play off.

I actually like the fact that the play-off formats are different. Each one well suited to its context.

Masters - Newest of the Majors, Amen Corner can turn the tournament in a heart beat. Sudden death is exactly right. :)
US Open - 72 hole slog fest. Par wins. If it's tied let's slog round for another 18. Everyone's asleep or has switched off anyway. :D
The Open & USPGA - Lots of tradition, not into cheap thrills, sensible but not staid. Mini play off keeps everyone happy. ;)

Sudden death for me.

I found the last round of the open this year to be some the most exciting golf I'd ever seen. Until the playoff, which was rather dull

Not hugely keen on sudden death as it means one lucky shot can win it, equally one unlucky shot can lose it.
18 holes is too much of a slog and everyone's lost interest by the turn.
4 hole playoff for me.
Gives you a chance to recover from bad luck or a bad shot and it means you're still compiling a score.
