Lowest Gross Prize

What makes you think best gross always picks up in Div 1? Certainly doesn't at our place.

I don't mean that best gross gets it, but it certainly isn't won by people shooting 6 under handicap - normally 3 or 4 under handicap wins division 1.

Also, we changed our divisions this year used to be + to 12, now it's + to 10. May be that's made a difference.

Not really much point in having a scratch prize unless there are regularly a good number of scratch or thereabout golfers competing.

For example, it's no real achievement shooting 4 or 5 over and beating a bunch of mid-high handicappers.

Our club has a Spring, Summer and Autumn meeting ('majors') each year and there is also a gross prize for the best B-Section player (hcp 12+). It's a bit of a farce, though it seems most Edinburgh clubs are the same. Just encourages a bit of handicap protection from golfers above the single figure mark.

Our scratch prize is generally well contested, with perhaps on average 30+ cat 1 golfers entering the gross sweep every week. I've won it once with a +1 (73) in particularly testing conditions, but more often than not you need sub par round to be in the running.

It should be compulsory.

Even if it's a couple of quid, a fiver, a cuddle from the Lady Captain, best gross should always get at the very least an acknowledgement.

So it's "whiny" when someone is suggesting that possibly they should reward the player who played the best golf that day ?

Err no, that's not what I said was it. I said it makes sense, i.e. it's a good idea. The fact it appeases the "whiny" low handicappers who constantly go on about never being able to win a medal despite shooting under par is a welcome by product.

At any club I've been a member at, if someone shoots under par they will often win the net prize anyway

I've shot 2 under and not won! Not "whining" about it, but it is worthy of comment I think.

We tend to have a small portion of the pot going to the best scratch. It's usually buttons but an important principle to have it, IMO. The day we stop acknowledging the best player in a comp is the day we should just stop pretending golf is a sport.

I think we have a seperate scratch sweep from the normal nett sweep. I don't think they even ask you if you want to enter unless you are in CAT1. It's a hard task with a few plus handicaps and a chunk of scratch golfers playing though.

Couple of previous clubs had Best Gross optional, same as 2s, with prizes for 1st to 3rd. At one, it was pretty much a donation to one or all of the Saltmans!

Simple quick question

Does your club have a lowest gross prize in the monthly medals etc ?
Nope, top 3 for prizes, regardless of comp, apparently changing to Overall winner and 3 Div Prizes next year.

Nope. The golfer with lowest gross at our place is branded a show off and then summarily executed in the car park. We have a lot of rabbits comps.

we have a few separate scratch comps, but the medals dont have a lowest gross prize.

same old spotty teenagers playing of plus handicaps win just about everything anyway...

Lowest gross isn't included in the sweep/prize fund. But there is a prize at the prize giving for the main meetings. Spring, Summer etc

Lowest gross, gives the best feel good factor imho.

Yep we have for all club medal & stableford comps & most opens . unless there was a very low entry

In fairness its all low handicappers (not me) have to play for in our place , either that or break par week after week

Nope. Why would we when our medals are handicap competitions ? I don't want someone that could have shot a gross 74, and been outside the buffer zone, diluting my winnings pot.:ooo: Alright someone elses winning pot.;)

We have two separate optional sweeps for lowest gross and nett. Not sure how many enter the gross but we have a few plus handicappers so virtually no chance of winning it.
