Low teens to single figures

Lessons are invaluble, but fundamental changes will take time to bed in - but after a year in the doldrums I;m really seeing the benefits of a more robust and reliable swing

Just need to work on the short game now...

there have been many posts about reducing the number of putts you have to bring your handicap down. What do you think would be an average amount of putts per round ?? and then aim for three or four off of that.

At our level a 30 average would be very good

Obviously a lot depends on how many greens you hit. I'm probably around 31-32.

More than putting a number on it, it's about eliminating 3 putts, and holing out more after chipping when you miss the green.

I averaged just over 32 last year, so not too bad.

I think my number was a little lower because I didn't hit too many greens in regulation and ended up with many chips / long putts from just off the putting surface. I suppose putts on GIR is also important.

Putting is a big one, turning 3 putts into 2 and also holing out after a chip.

More generically though it's about making less mistakes. True of any sport that, the higher up the ladder you go the less mistakes people make.

So things like taking driver where maybe you shouldn't, being realistic if you are in a bit of trouble rather than going for everything etc. Just minimising mistakes across the board (including 3 putts) should make a huge difference....

Agree with this - total putts per round can be a bit misleading in theory I could have 36 putts in a round and feel like I'd putted well because my approaches were always 20-40ft from the cup and I'd always got down in 2!

The flip side of course is that I could have 30 putts and feel like I'd putted like a dog because I'd been stiffing my approaches and chipping close when I missed greens and then not holing from 1ft-10ft!

I'm kind of in the same boat. Went through a major swing change last Winter to get me into singles, the aim was to get a swing to get me down to low singles. Ruined my game for a year. Things are starting to turn around now and I'm probably striking my irons about the same as I was a year ago now, but my swing has fewer faults.

I've always had a reasonable short game around the green and inside 100 and ok putting. Very occasional 3 putt, but I probably don't make enough 10 footers. But then very rarely miss inside 3-4ft.

My best rounds tend to come when my driver is behaving so I'm going to spend time this year getting more consistent with the big dog and more time on the 10-15ft range putts.
