Hi all.
Ive decided as of today that im looking to join a new club.
My reason for this is as im 24 my current club only do an intermediate membership upto that age so prices will go up.
I know a lot of clubs do an intermediate price upto 30.
Does anyone have any recommendations of a really nice friendly club within about 15 miles of Camberley, GU18 5 postcode.
I need to find somewhere by 31st of March so would be great if you could help.
Thanks

Have a look at Camberley Heath. TXL (Anthony is a member there) Think they do intermediate membership up to 28 or 30 i think. Also have some sort of deal if you join before 31 March. Check their website.

Played the course a few times, and it's very nice, Harry Colt designed, and i imagine just up the road from you ? I believe Richard Boxall and Radar are members.

You are correct Richard, I did not respond earlier as I have no idea what the fee categories are :) :(

Not sure if Radar is still a member, but Richard is and still visits along with a few others.

Like Homer's offer, drop me a PM if you would like a game.

I've just recently joined Royal Ascot and am thouroughly enjoying it. It helped knowing a few guys before I joined but everyone I have met has been very welcoming. The course isn't the best in the area but it's a long way from the worst and provides a decent challenge. I'm in Bagshot and it takes me about 10 mins door to door so it's easy to get to and not qualifying for the intermediate rates (grrrr) it was also one of the cheapest and has the added benefit of not having to book tee times.

Not wanting to be RA specific...

Camberley Heath is a nice course but at £1800 is well out of my price range but I can't give you any more info than that.

We've also got Windlesham on our doorstep but again that was about £1600 and too pricey for me.

If you wanted to go a bit further afield you could check out Sand Martins or Mill Ride.

As a new member I can't recommend RAGC highly enough and you should definately consider it. You've already got Homer's offer but feel free to PM me as well and I'm sure the 3 of us could meet up and show you around.

One thing I should add which is a great plus is there is no need to book a tee time and you can just roll up (apart from when a comp is on and there is usually plenty of notice so you can avoid that period). It maes such a difference especially for a few holes after work in the summer or late evening a the weekend

Merrist Wood GC nr Guildford is pretty good and does intermediate membership up til 30. The rates are about £550 per year and you get free use of other Crown Golf courses as well. (Pine Ridge in Camberley being one of them)

Wentworth's not far from Camberley. As are Woking, Worplesdon and West Hill GCs.

You missed Sunningdale, The Berkshire and Swinley Forest - to name a few :)

Seriously though, other ones to consider are West Byfleet and Chobham.

Firstly thank you for all your replys.
Homer and Hawkeye i may have to take you up on your offer, so thank you for your kind offer.
Camberley is too expensive.
Army ive heard a lot of bad things about the course.
I was a member at Chobham but its far to easy and short.
Ive also played Merrist Wood but its a bit too far.
With regards to Wentworth, Sunningdale, Berkshire, Swinley, and the 3 W's if i win the lottery i deninatly would.
Im having a look at North Hants and East Berkshire tomorrow. If anyones played them and has any views that would be great.
Thank you all once again for your comments

Looking at the rates that Homer posted Ascot is cheaper than North Hants as for a 24 year old a £1000 (I kid you not) entry fee has to be paid. Annual subscription is £565. These are 2010 rates so may have changed for 2011

East Berks is a decent course but it is a very cliquey club and so it may take a fair bit of work to get regular games etc. Like I say 15 minutes to Fleet is pushing it  ;) but it does look a nice place. I think we are pretty competitice on price (compared to Sand Martins - £237 bar levy and pre book times, Mill Ride, West Byfleet, Chobham, Windlesham etc). The offer is there and you know where I am if you want a game

Homer: Does Royal Ascot look like it does in the pictures on the website?
Please dont take this the wrong way but by the picture on the website it looks like a big field with 18 hole stuck on it.
It looks very open with not much scenery around.
Please correct me if im wrong.

If you want picturesque then Ascot isn't for you. It's a relatively new course and a lot of the trees have yet to mature so it does look open and it isn't high up so you aren't gonna get views of Windsor Castle. What you will get is a decent test of golf.

If you want a mature course which looks good on the eye around here there are plenty to choose from, but you'll need that lottery win to afford to play there.

It was built on existing farm land and so there are a lot of mature tress around the place that give parts of it an air of it being more than 6 years old. The par 3 6th for example with mature trees either side could have come from any of the bigger named courses locally.

The problem is that there are some holes where the staked trees need time to develop (another 5 years) and the 14th and 15th in particular need the ones designed to separate each fairway to come on to give the hole its own character.

There are some very good holes and the six par 3's are a stern test off the whites and so if you can make six nett pars there you'll be doing pretty well. It drains pretty well (apart from the 14th 15th and 16th which are the lowest lying and work is in progress to address that) and there are no winter tees. The greens don't always look a picture but are very true and usually quick(ish) although not speedy enough for Smiffy!

I guess the only way to judge it is to come along and play or at least ask the guys on here that have come to the two GM days. I'm sure they will give you brutally frank opinions

Camberley Heath is £817 membership fee up to age 30, and the joining fee appears to be just over £400 (50% reduction before 31 March) Of all the courses mentioned it would be at the top of my pile on course quality alone.

Mind you our course would be £600 with no joining fee. Shame it is outside your mileage radius. Also in my opinion a better course than N.Hants, and from what i have heard a friendlier club.
