so yesterday me and my mate turn up for our tee time at 1448 .....only to see a kids comp teeing off and about a million of the little scrotes all over the course with parents/hangers on walking the course with them! 5and a half hours later we finally trudged off the course ...............5 and half bleedin hours for a 2 ball
i was ready to walk off at the 4th

regale me of times you have spent hours on a frustrating round of golf

So, when would you put the Juniors out ?

Give it was a 'kids comp' was it not in the fixture card ?

I do hope you gave them the same courtesy you would have given a gents comp if you had turned up at the tail end of that ;)

so we have people complaining that Rory was "groomed" for success from 10 years old, obviously they would prefer kids to be left in standard club surroundings. Then we have people complaining that kids take too long to play competitions.. looks like the next generation of stars might be a while appearing, as they'll all be drummed out of clubs so that us "grown up" members can play in 3 hours then retire to the bar...
and for the record, i've played in competitions that have lasted that length, and still enjoyed them...

Well said us juniors get it tough from old fogies and it just so happens that my longest round came because me and a friend had to let a bunch of impatient Adults through, whenever we play off a better handicap, play off the same tees and probably play quicker
Phew!! That is a load off my mind :D

I played the longest round behind a man in is 60s pulling a powakaddy with a flat battery. On the uphill 13th it was like looking at a scene from Cliffhanger...

No course marshal or monitoring of tee times?

My mates have been on the golf course since sunrise this morning (around 5am) and are still there, trying to complete their 100 hole challenge.

Almost there, but surely the longest round ever?

Our 4 ball took 5 and a half on saturday too. It was not fun in the rain.

I am not a slow player but I kept getting told to hurry up every now and again as I pulled my macwets on and off :D

I guess there has to be some give and take in this. It doesn't sound the most organised event with masses of people milling about and queues on every tee. I'd have thought the junior organiser would have been out there ensuring it went smoothly and ensuring they were observing the etiquette.

On the other side juniors have to play somewhere and so if you knew there was a comp going on either start on the back nine, get there earlier and go out or put up and shut up

I can honestly say that I once spent 6 hours on a golf course playing one round.
It was Club Champs at my old course and the rough was so severe, the fairways so narrow that on most holes there were at least 2 or 3 looking for balls. Completely ridiculous.
I began at 9.32 and walked off at 3.31.
One group actually rang for a takeaway Pizza to meet them at a hole near the clubhouse - no joke!!

My 8yr old has recently started on the course with the club academy. I think the club do warn members though so if they want to tee off behind they have to be prepared! One of the things I find (in being a parent walking with them) is that you always have to remind them to speed up, have their club ready for their next shot while waiting, and sometimes it takes them 5-6 goes to get the ball to stay on the tee!!

All part of the learning process but I have noticed some parents (even golfing ones) don't encourage quick play.

One lad in our group last week would take 4-5 slow practice swings before duffing his shot 10-20 yards, only to start all over again. His dad was clearly a golfer, and just let him get on with it while we all waited patiently

my longest ever was a 2 ball in a buggy around oaks park, thanks to 4 hackers with no course manners what so ever and refusing to let us through ours was 5:45 mins, this was dispite two requests from the course marshalls a and nurmerous hints.

I play at an Academy course and teaching takes priority over rounds - as it should IMHO on an academy course.

We just skip a hole or two and play them on the way back. Even missed the first and played it last after the youngsters were getting so bunker practice.

One day one of 'em might be the next Rory and it's be nice to think they'd have fond memories of their golfing youth.

On the other hand I can see your frustrations - the cub should have let you know this was on when you were booking AND made sure things kept moving at a reasonable pace.
