This has been melting my head for months now, ever since I discovered I could reach our longest par 5 with a 3 wood if I hit a good tee shot (I used to have a 4 wood and couldn't quite get there so didn't try as it's not a shot without danger).

So, the hypothetical question is....

Your 3 wood carries 45 yards longer than your 4 iron.

Do you want 2 clubs inbetween with 15 yards gaps, or 1 club with a 20-25 yard gap, or something else?

Just 2 provisos; I don't want to go back to 4 wood instead of 3 wood, and I don't want to swop the 4 iron for something a little longer.

Would have one in that gap mate

Rescue or 3 iron or 5 wood

1 in that gap is more than enough imo, its when that gap is 60 yards + you def need a 2nd club in there for me

Agreed just the one for me. I don't think the bigger gap in the long clubs is as important as the short clubs when accuracy and control become more important. But then I am a big Dave Pelz fan so I would save the spot for an extra wedge.

One for me as well, my bag is geared towards my gameplan which is very short game biased.

Currently its a hybrid at 19* which is pretty much halfway between the two distance wise.

I'm in the same boat in terms of carry distance difference and only have one (either a hybrid or 2 iron).

I only choose that because I prefer to have 52, 56, 60 wedges though.

Titleist 915F 5 wood. It's adjustable so you can dial it in , up or down, to whatever gap you need to fill....I love mine!!!

I had a go with a 915f today and was a bit disappointed. Not with the strikes, but it just looked too deep at address for me. I hit it ok but it didn't fill me with confidence.

I have the clubs I need (and more! :o) for whichever way I decide to fill the gap(s), and I know which way I want to go, but I have these voices that won't go away!

I get it mate, I chop and change, have left the 3 iron out last couple of rounds and in a couple of spots felt lost without it, whichever way you go you'll want the other option lol

You could always base your gapping on the depths of the greens on your home course, e.g. if the greens are big put two clubs in, but if they're small you might only need one club......... or have I got it the wrong way round... sorry, tres knackered tonight.

I've got two in there, although I'll not hit them as far as you but it gives me more options in the 160 - 210 yard range. Truth is I don't think too much about how far my three wood goes - I know roughly but it'll run out a lot so can be quite variable.

I go 5i, 5h (my 4i replacement), 4h, 5w, 3w and I have a good idea of distances for everything up to the 5w. The 3w is strictly for when I want to hit is as far as I can.

If you have room for 2 clubs then use them..
You only have 2 extra wedges and you're obviously happy with that set up so have the 3w, 5w,3h, set that's in your signature....
Kind of similar to what I have but I don't have a 4 iron....
I go 3w, 5w, 22° hybrid 5-wedges - although my 3w is set to 16° and the 5w to 19 or 20°....

Does the setup work with the rest of the holes on your course..?

I deliberately left distances out. Not because I hit it miles but someone would chime in and say they hit their 3w x yards and then it would descend into the usual rubbish! :)

I see your point though. I don't actually have many occasions when I'm hitting into a green from the distances I need to fill, but when I do I hate feeling that I have too little, or especially too much club.

The problem is I'm not happy with the current wedge set up, that's the reason for the potential change.

My thinking was that I could quite happily manufacture shorter distances with mostly one club, but it's not working out. I've been terrible up to 100yds and I miss my 56°.

One of our par 4's I very occasionally need up to a 5w. Of our 3 par 5's, one I can't get near with the usual wind direction, one I can reach with 3w if I hit a good drive, and the last is usually 3 hybrid at most.

It sounds silly thinking about it now having that many long club options for the number of times I needed them.

Do you use the clock face method?

ish.

I think 'waist high' and 'shoulder high', with and without wrist hinge.

It ought to work, but it hasn't since I switched to 2 wedges. I'm nowhere near as good from inside 100yds as I was when I had 52,56,60.

Maybe with a lot more practice I could make it work, but it seems simpler to lose a long club and have my 56 back.
