Local Elections

3 independents and 1 labour councillor in my ward currently. Do you think councillors have realised they have a better chance of staying a councillor long term if they don't show allegiance to any political party? Makes sense as you'll alienate at least half your prospective voters if you do!

In recent years my local elections have seen the betting at 1/800 for the Tories to get the vote. I see no change to that this year.

What a shame.

Just looked it up. We have six candidates, four of whom will be elected. All from the main parties. Hardly democracy, I don't think I'll bother, looks like more trouble than it's worth.

:(

Totally agree, and that local councils are just extensions of central govt. if I vote, it will be for the opposition, whoever they are, if only to try and keep the ruling party honest.

A local council election in Middlesbrough for vacant seat has just seen a Tory replacing a Labour for the first time in the council's history!

A Tory in Middlesbrough??!!

The Labour MP for Middlesbrough has just said Corbyn must go!

Is this a typo? A Tory in the Boro. Does this mean Buckingham palace will collapse? Wow, if Labour lose a seat there then they really are in trouble.

Straight from the Middlesbrough Evening Gazette website... my shop steward father in law would be doing back flips and crying in his beer if he were still here.

I've never voted Tory in my life but with everyone else being so dire and the tories being the only party that seems to agree with me on a certain local issue they might actually get my vote. :o

We both have Postal votes - mainly down to HID being a nurse and often working on election days and not having the time to get to a polling station
I'm sitting here looking at the list of names.
I don't recognise any...
I've had no information through from any candidate explaining their stance, policies or views...
How the hell am i supposed to vote..?
If they want me to vote for them, they should be telling me why.....

Fortunately, by living in London, I don’t have to make a choice till next year....

But where l live, Labour will be a shoe-in; where l work, the Tories. It's the way of the world.

Unfortunately living in Mansfield, Labour have had there chance for many years both at local council and MP level and quite frankly not achieved anything. It is a desolate dump of a town going backwards. There is no way that the Torys will get in but independents have got a strong foothold. Ironically it is Labour putting up barriers that to an extent hold the independents back. Our local councillor works very hard at local level. I will be voting for the man and not the party.

It always was, Tashy, always was. Nice to know standards have been maintained since l left the area 40 years ago. :)
