Local Elections 2019

Turnout in Hertsmere a whopping 32.8%!! Council remains a Conservative stronghold, which I'm happy with as they're a good Council. Big change in my 'ward' however with the 3 Conservative councillors ousted by Lib Dems. Will see how that plays out as the three previous councillors did some really good things for the ward.

Big swing to remain parties. Euros will be interesting in a couple of weeks.

Is it a big swing to Remain parties or a protest vote against those that haven't delivered Brexit? Depends on what spin you want to put on it I suppose. Maybe the EU elections in a couple of weeks time will give a better indication of a swing to Remain.

Local hardly makes any difference. As part of the surry commuter & stockbroker belt, our local has always been a toss up between Cons and Lib Dems. Labour cant be bothered to put a candidate. Given Surrey is held by Cons, our local will hardly make any difference. Though Con might still win, expecting a swing away from Cons towards Lib Dem and Green

I agree it is not a big swing, around 30% the independent observers say.

All things considered, losing 80 seats isn’t anywhere near a broken nose for Labour. Considering the wider political situation they’ve weathered this storm very well. The Tories however...
The day is still young. However when tories usually loose seats Labour gain. They haven't by a long shot.

It is absolutely a swing to remain parties. But the reasons for which could be anything. I strongly suspect it's a mixture of apathy towards the main 2, coupled with a will to remain. Sure if we had a GE though, the Lib Dems would be nowhere to be seen as per last year.

Sir Vince Cable boasting about his being the leading party of Remain. So basically, he is claiming success for being a party representing the losers. Yep, he's a Liberal Democrat through and through.

Poor auld soul can't even get that statement right, he is the second leading party.

[Probably even the 4th if you include the Tory/Lab remain voters.]

Think on if anyone believes the outcome is a swing towards Remain. It's due to the disgust people hold with the two main parties and can only register their feelings by voting for someone else. LibDems, Greens and Independents being the only choices. I think we will see a different overall trend in the Euro elections.

That’s quite dismissive is it not ? Do you not recall that millions also voted to remain in the EU who would have previously voted for Tory or Labour have switched to Lib Dem’s because of their Brexit policy. It most certainly can be a case of swing as opposed to protest - don’t ignore the millions who voted a different way to you

We got to vote for a regional mayor, North of Tyne, that we had previously voted not to have ☹. 32% turnout and sad to say the chimp with a red rosette beat the chimp with a blue rosette. The independent came 3rd which was a shame although he comfortably beat the libdem and UKIP candidates. It was decided by pr, 1st and 2nd preference method. Interestingly 45k people didn't have a 2nd preference, I was one of them. We couldn't bring ourselves to vote for any of the others, they were that grim.

Apparently he will now be the voice of the region 😢😢

This my wife and I and many of our friends. The only way to send a message to the parties was to either not vote or vote for the other parties. It had nothing to do with Remain but the remainers are gonna jump on this like a dog on a bone regardless

You get used to PR after a while and realise it is a much fairer way of voting.

An example would be in the Scottish Parliament many of the Labour and Tory MSP's have never won a public vote.
One notable Tory front bench loudmouth [spokesman/person] is now in his 11 year at Holyrood without ever winning or even standing for election. Claiming over half a million £££££s in salary

oof, the brexit boat has already sailed.

My Tory candidate is a horrble woman. Her husband is horrible too. I know them well. They were both binned off from my golf club.

The other choices were labour, or lib dem.

I have no idea who got in. If there had been an independent they would have got my vote.

I think this was the exact scenario in a lot of places from what I've seen on the news, I'd love to see a general election right now.

Don’t expect much would be different Tories would still get the most votes

Did enjoy this little tweet

UKIP (ultra brexit) -70% 💀

CON (hard brexit) -25% 🤯

LAB (sneaky brexit) -10% 🤬

LD (Remain) +110% 😆

GRN (Remain) +550% 😂

Our independant Mayor got booted out by two votes after a recount or two. Me am not happy with the result but it sticks in my throat asking for a second vote coz I now know what I am voting for. Things have become a lot clearer since 4.30 pm
