Had my first lesson with my pro last night, felt I needed help as my iron play has been awful lately and my confience and enjoyment has bottomed out quite frankly.
So he starts by getting me to hit a few balls, which I do so badly. He then gets me to try the towel tucked under the armpit drill, and just do half swings. To say it felt alien is an understatement, but it probably shows just how far out my swing had drifted. Anyway, these shots went even worse than the first ones. We carried on with this until the end of the lesson with me getting more dejected with every shot, I think I only properly connected with two the whole lesson.
Chris didn't seem fazed in the slightest though, told me not to worry, keep practising, keep the swing nice and short, no more than three quarters, and it will come. So last night I spent half an hour in the garden just swinging the club, with the towel tucked in, while the wife looked at me like i gone insane.
Nipped up the course for an hour this afternoon to try actually hitting a ball before I get battered tomorrow morning, and the difference was like chalk and cheese. My three quater length swing was going further and straighter than my old full swing, my short irons were going somewhere near their intended direction, and I even managed a couple of sweetly struck 4 irons off the fairway, a little left to right with the longer clubs but nothing than can't be compensated for.
So yeah, anyone thinking of getting a lesson but not sure if it will benefit - do it!

A good PGA pro will always find a way to get you to improve. Some of the stuff my pro has had me working on seemed totally alien and I really struggled but having kept the faith I have finally turned a corner in 2013. I had a real meltdown about 4-5 weeks ago but have stared to come out the other side. 4th in the medal last week and a good range session tonight have got me really excited to get our course back fully open on Sunday
