Lefties playing righty and righties playing lefty

My Granddad was right handed but played golf left handed. He had polio as a child which ruined the muscles in his right arm. He couldn't generate any power right handed so tried it as a leftie and made it work. He played off of 2 in his prime so he was doing something right ;)

Left handed golfers always look awkward.

If playing the 'wrong' way round was such an advantage, all the pro's would be taught to play this way, instead of just a few. With modern analysis of the golf swing, I'm sure they would have spotted any advantage by now.

2 guys in our team are lefties playing right handed, 2 & 3 handicaps (one is current club champion) I remember the club champion started playing left handed as a junior but switched shortly after he started. I don't think it really matters for those who start young, could be different in adults starting out though.

Yes please explain! I've always wondered why most right-handers don't play left-handed.

Cos, when I've tried it I miss the ball!

Fair enough :)

I think its a case of whether players think of the golf swing as a forehand swing or backhand swing. For me its a backhand - I'm guessing most other lefties playing righty are the same.

I agree with Leftie 100%.

Note that David Gower was a right hander that batted beautifully with a left handers stroke. He believes that he played the right way and that everyone else is /was wrong!

I am a left hander who plays golf right handed though so am biased when I agree with this view. I do everything left handed apart from play golf. I have always been led to believe that this put me in good company but am struggling to find any evidence to back this up on the web.

Cheers,

Snelly.
