Leaving present?

Hi everyone.
Basicly I am after some advice. My boss is leaving and we thought it would be nice to get him a club and have it engraved as a gift. I know very little about golf, so I'm not sure how to proceed with this idea. My first train of thought was a driver or putter (I know the rest of his clubs are Cleveland) and between us we can get him the top of their range driver no problem. But not playing myself I don't know if it's a very personal thing choosing the right club for you? We want it to be a surprise so can't ask him outright but I could ask his wife to look at what he already has. Any guidance would be appreciated. If not a club any other ideas (as golfers) for a leaving gift?

Thanks in advance

Chris

Buying clubs for anyone can be quite tricky. Most of the advice on here when people ask about buying clubs is to get them custom fitted There are so many variables to take into account and such a large variety, you will probably end up with something that does not suit him. I am sure he would accept it with good grace but it will not be any use to him. One idea might be is to give him that experience find a local pro or ask his wife who he uses and pay for him to be custom fit for a club of his choice. Alternately buy him a weekend away at a good course or a round with a friend (does his wife play) somewhere that's in the top 100 courses maybe. Good luck.

It is a tricky one - so many options with each golf club means there's more chance of you getting it wrong than right. As Doh says, it's likely the club would be useless to him.

A weekend away or a round at a good club seems like a good idea. That way he'll get to play a course which is (probably) above and beyond the quality of the regular course(es) he plays.

Golf Monthly have a top 100 list, again as Doh said. Check that out and see which ones are close to you / him!

I'd definitely agree with the guys in regards to a weekend away being a good idea. The clubs in someone's bag are very personal, and it can take some people a while to decide to integrate a new club into the bag, so I'd go with the safer option, and book for him to go away for the weekend to a nice golf resort.

Thanks guys. That's why I thought I'd ask. As I started to look into it I realised it might not as simple as I first thought! I look into weekends away. Is there anything you could recommend as a keepsake we could get him aswel or instead that he would use and not something he might buy himself? Maybe something that you don't need but would like to have, you know... "yeah it would be nice to have, but it's a bit expensive just to buy just for that reason"

buy him a classic putter! who wouldn't love one of those?

oul scotty Cameron American classic or even a Wilson 8802 ! id be well chuffed with one of those!

Or you could try and get hold of some merchandise/accessories from the course you're sending him to. So a pitch mark repairer, golf ball, ball marker etc with the course logo on?

You can get lots of personalised golf related things online, just do a quick google search - maybe a pitchmark repairer engraved with "Best Wished from (company name)" or even a box of golf balls which can be personalised - again, you could find out what golf balls he uses from his wife.

Everyone who plays golf needs a pitchmark repairer & ball marker, which are fairly cheap and easy to get a hold of!

If he is anything like me, shy away from the box of balls! They'll be gone in a week!

That's true... although my missus once got me a box of balls with a photo of me on. I framed 3 as to not lose them all!

There is something oddly satisfying knowing that, somewhere out there, a complete stranger is going to dig deep into the rough looking for their golf ball, only to come across a ball with my mug grinning up at them.

Haha that would be brilliant!

Although something a bit weird about smashing a driver into your own face. Maybe if you put the face of someone you don't like on it, you would hit it further!

Believe me, if you're having a bad round and you want to release some anger, make sure the smiley grinning face of yourself is pointed right up at you.

You'll hit your drive further than ever before. You'll hit it 50 yards right too, but still long!!!!

Hmmmm, I wonder if changing the face would change which direction it goes. If it's your bosses face, it may be a pull left.

Sounds like you should get fitted properly by your pro for the face on your ball!

I imagine the 0.0000001 gram of extra weight from the ink could possibly give you a power fade / strong draw depending on the position of the ink at address... I'll chat to my pro about it maybe.

get him a wooden putter various company's do them have it mounted with a plaque, better than a weekend away that will be forgotten soon after a few weeks, dont buy a club for him to use,as others have said will be of no use and stuck in garage till he throws/trades it in.

Hi Chris,

As others have said clubs are quite personal, and he probably wouldn't want to use something engraved for the sake of damaging it.

There are plenty of personalised options, including pitch mark repairers, ball markers and balls. You can also find some nice golf themed gifts if you look around, like these cool watches: http://www.etiqus.co.uk/shop.html

If you want a safe bet then a golf weekend away is a great idea. There are plenty of spa hotels with golf courses attached which offer a great romantic weekend/golf combo for him and his wife. Here's our top 50 recommended venues for golf weekend breaks:http://www.golf-monthly.co.uk/courses/uk-and-ireland/top-50-uk-ireland-stay-and-play-1684

Good luck!

Didnt golf monthly do a thing where you could get a cover page of the mag with your pic on it ?

could have fun with that , Joe Bloggs earns tour card & leaves day job on the front etc

We did do personalised cover cards for a short while, but don't any more unfortunately, plus I get the impression they're looking for something a bit more classy than 'Joe Bloggs hoping for more 69s upon retirement'
