For the past week or so I've been getting messages from Windows asking me to update to their latest version. I'm a bit wary as I always seem to have various problems with my PC laptop after an update.
Has anyone updated and had any problems ?
Should i update or not ?

I updated a week or so ago. No issues so far. But I did find a massive number of files needed defragging afterwards.

Doesnt W10 do defrags automatically? i have 2 W10s.. one is general home use. Create and delete docs but never have to defrag. the other one has videos (big files) which i delete after watching - so creates gaps in the disc. Again i havent defraged it in a long time. both run SSDs but I think W10 sorts things out

I updated both (quite old) Laptop and (more recent and with SSD, but still nowhere 'latest model') Floor Standing PC a couple of weeks ago, Only 'problem' was the length of time it took and the way the 'percentage complete' stayed at some low value for a heck of a long time before ticking over nicely!

The short answer is yes, and then again, no.
Windows will routinely defrag a mechanical hard drive on a scheduled basis (which can be amended by the user). For SSDs the answer is less straight forward. SSDs store data in a manner (using an in-built wear levelling algorithm) so that defragging is not a necessity, in fact it's best not to as the algorithm takes care of how the data is distributed. You can run optimisers on SSDs but again, IMO it's best left to the algorithm to do this.
SSDs don't have mechanical data seek latency issues that lead to fragmentation and therefore should remain contiguous with data for longer. Windows will, on occasion, run an optimisation schedule - for me I would recommend disabling this.
If you had the same use-case but on a mechanical hard drive, the video editing one would need defragmented on a regular basis.

If the "delay" was at the update stage (pre-shutdown) then this is fairly normal for larger updates as it needs to run an optimisation check. If, however, this was at the installation stage, this would indicate that there is an issue with your system. Not a major issue (for now) but one you may want to investigate with a registry clean up and error check of your disc(s).
Also worth cleaning out a desktop system once every few months with compressed air and a vacuum to ensure that you are not suffering from any thermal throttling slowing things down unnecessarily.

Thnks for this advice. From memory, there were several re'boots, so I'm not certain where, in the process, the delay was! But, as the floor-standing PC is in a fairly dusty area anyway, I'll consider the 'quarterly' exercise you suggest.

It runs weekly but I do a one off after any major change.
