Laptop spring clean

see this all the time with broadband, as a broadband engineer the amount of houses that need internal wiring issues sorted is unreal, old style sockets (with the T logo) and star wiring are a big culprit. Getting a lot of new builds aswell where the builders use cheap internal wiring, can have 10mb at point of entry and lose like 8mb just on crappy wiring!

Bob, get 7. seriosuly good. I have it on all my pc's and laptops (2 pc's and 3 laptops) and never have to spring clean. Also I only use Microsoft security essentials and have yet to have any virus issues.

Vista sucks

Sorry Boys, Just picked up the thread.
Bob you have a fairly basic spec machine which is being crippled by Vista,

The only way you are going to see any improvement is to 1) Dump Vista for 7
or 2) Buy a new lappy which will have 7 already on it

Option 1 Pros and cons - Your laptop looks like its about 5 years old, so one day soon its going to go pop, dead. you are entering old age and so mechanical failure is more likely, thats the lappy, Bob not you :0

Loading 7 will cost about £80 for the software, and several hours loading your backups, getting drivers and updates etc

After 7 is loaded, your machine will be more stable, but it will still be slower than being stuck behind an 8ball of senior ladies comparing shafts. should be a tad slicker than present though.

You could load 7 today and its a dead machine next week

Option 2

Brand new lappy for about £429 with Intel I3 2nd generation CPU 500Gb hard drive and 4 Gb RAM
with warranty and 7 all included

Your accountant can charge it against tax if its for your business

It should easily last you the next 5/6 years

thats about it

Re broadband, the signal deteriorates with distance from the exchange, 2.5 is pretty good for an "out in the sticks" location, I have customers whos broadband speeds are slower than dialup.

A faster PC doesnt equal faster broadband...

some of these customers are going over to satellite broadband 6mbps for £25 per month , its more expensive than normal, but if you are desperate.....

Fragger

Thanks Fragger, I was mostly right :) but needed the professional to come in and back me up

You doing good there boy :-)

its important to let people know the options, then make up their own minds, it helps if you are able to tackle a complete reformat / clean install, as this would add £120 onto the bill if I were to do it, this makes it uneconomic and most peeps would go down the new kit route at that point

But if you can do it yourself, then it is a valid option

Job done.
Everything back to how it was on the day I bought it.
Now, where is everything?

Thanks for the good advice Fragger but the new laptop will have to wait a while.
In the meantime, lots of space available for new golf swings
Just have to get rid of all the ACER stuff from the dektop now :)

Or option 3 (best). Don't buy a Windows machine at all.
