Does any one on here play with a knee injury, something like a ruptured ligament?
Specialist said I would be okay, so I hit some balls today, so far so good. But balance is a bit cattle trucked when walking.
So if you have done the journey, your experiences would be appreciated.

My entire modern day golfing “career” has been with knee injury’s

I gave up football because was just too much for the knees anymore

I was 24 when I tore my ACL in my left knee (my right has had key hole surgery to clear out gunk) I’ve had a piece of my hamstring removed from my left leg and screwed either side the knee to make a new ligament. On cold days it feels worse. However the walking combined with the swinging does help keep it from flaring up all time

Sometimes feel it through swing

Flare your feet it bit so your knee is half in the finish position to help prevent too much twist

Xray and MRI scans showed i had a torn meniscus PhotoScan 1.jpg the consultant recommended keyhole surgery.
But while waiting [ 4 months i think ] for the OP, it improve so much by itself, i cancelled the OP after speaking with the consultant.
He said to call him if it flares up again, but 6 months later it's still ok with no pain so fingers crossed.

Not really the same but...
Had most of the cartilage removed from my right knee over 3 operations between 02 and 04.
Was told I'd need a replacement knee within 10 years so quite happy it's still working ok.
Bit of discomfort for a few weeks after the ops but these days not much more than the usual aches and pains you get with getting older.
Had a potentially bigger issue with my left knee before I started playing golf.
The kneecap is held in place by 2 upper tendon and one lower tendon
The lower tendon was begining to fray like a bit of rope.
If it ihad let go, the upper two tendons would have ripped the kneecap apart like being tied to two horses and them running off in opposite directions!!
6 weeks in plaster cured that but it took longer to get the strength back in the leg.

I've played with dodgy knees and ankles for 20 of the 26 years I've been playing.
You get used to it and you adapt what you can and can't do.
Hope yours sorts itself out...

Had on and off knee problems for 25 years since I first snapped my left ACL. Have played with it in pain at times but becomes very detrimental to your golf if do this too much. Got to the point where my swing was built around protecting my left knee, so a locked down left hip flexor and a very strong quad protecting the knee and far less left side rotation and a lot of right hand assistance to square the club up as it wasnt happening naturally as the body was turning far less (and almost stopping at impact)

With hindsight and what I know now if its your left knee I would do a lot of work on strengthening your hip muscles making sure that you get full range of movement in your hips as this will cause much better movement and reduce the pressure on the knee. Find a decent Pilates teacher!

Had 2 knees ops on each knee, last one about 12 years ago.
I have good and bad days and can’t say golf makes it any worse

I've had keyhole surgery on both knees to clear out all the crap that was collecting there, I have a torn meniscus in my right knee and arthritis in both knees. Although I'm crap I can't blame my knees.
They sometimes ache after a round, but nothing too bad.
Two important bits of advice;
1. Flare your front foot out at address, and
2. Build up your quad muscles as much as you can.

Good luck and don't let it stop you playing. (y)

Oh, I'm not a doctor!

Thank you for all the replies, I was sh@ting bricks thinking I might not play again!

you might not play quite the same again!!! one other thing I meant to post, a lot of the time its the doubt about the knee that causes the problem. If you dont trust it 100% then you will start to make "protective" adjustments to your swing (which you may not even realise you are doing!)

not sure if youve ever filmed your swing before, if so well worth comparing against it in a few months time to see what and how much has changed and whether its beneficial

P Harrington suffers with his knees .. he started a swing where he moved constantly so he followed through with a walk

Have a google of it.. apparently really helped him

I play with a painful knee. No real diagnosis of what is actually wrong but might be linked the metal traction bar that once went through the bone just under it. It 'went' suddenly about 10 years ago just after a prolonged period (months) of trying to recover my strength through increased exercise.

I can press around the lower inside just below the joint and fell the point of pain.

Doc just suggested cortisone injection.

My left knee has been given me grief for a few weeks especially bending down to get the ball out of the hole and occasionally after a range session. Feels like it has fluid on it and I've put a support on it. Worried as I know both knees aren't right and will probably need surgical intervention at some point. That point may be arriving

See a physio , they can do checks on the ligaments and give you exercises to ease the symptoms

when youve missed best part of 10 years golf from them , paid subs for the year and played one round then torn the ACL again then start worrying about it lol, a few weeks youll survive Homie

if its just fluid they can give you decent physio and drain the knee, no real need for surgery

I know if it's fluid it's not a problem. However I damaged both knees playing football and was told back then I'd need further surgery as I got older. I keep putting off getting it looked at as having paid my subs I don't want to then lose a chunk of the season recovering. What are the general recovery times for a) cartilage damage and b) knee replacement?

a) dont know
b) unless youre going private you almost certainly wont get one (you have to either be a whippersnapper or them expect the new knee to outlive you it seems, unless you cant walk 10 paces)

Ignore what you were told many years ago, its moved on so so much (the difference in snapping my ACL in the early 90s to someone doing it now and how they treat it is like night and day!). If you have long standing knee probs that you dont know exactly what they are see a specialist for a proper diagnosis, you may be pleasantly suprised

I think Gary Player did the same. I do flair my front foot, that was always to allow my hip to travel through. So it doesn’t feel uncomfortable or unnatural.
The MRI results should indicate what’s wrong, there is a load of muck in there as it does not go to follow bend when loaded. Plus it’s unstable when I rock backwards. This is my left knee, my right knee already has a ruptured ACL.
I was worried that to ruptured acl’s and that was game over.
Also need to get it done ASAP as the threat of redundancy looms.

Sorry to hear about the redundancy. How quickly can you get it done. I assume this is under the company health cover? When will you hear about your job situation. Worrying times on both fronts

It’s probably taking the load from your other knee

When I tore my left one i waited 18 months for an op and by end my right knee was in constant pain from getting more load
