Ah, cheers chaps.... I must already be at the bar.... Think I'll have a Laphroaig... There again fill up the flask.

So it seems there is no reason I or anyone else can't wear a kilt for golf, certainly better than shorts...

Of course its deciding which of the Macperson plaids to go for, the Clan tartan, the Hunting taran, etc.

I once bought some of those kilt socks to use for walking many years ago... just the right length, soft & very comfy.

Best of all another reason to allow me a GPS. Might see what happens if I turn up New years morning at our clubhouse in one, see what happens.

So all I need now is the Wode & the Hobnail boots with the spikes & I'm away.... FREEDOM rofl :D

Well its certainly better than turning up in a Morris outfit... Imagine if all the fourball did that & the fact we're carrying around a bag of sticks... out would come the hankies & the bells (preferably in a bottle) & at each green there would be a dance to put the flag away... Each group would need a fiddle player or an accodianist... Just think how long a round would last then...

Yep, the kilt is certainly a better solution

Sounds like a damn good idea to me. Much preferable to shorts that the knobbly kneed crew seem to want to put on at the fist glimpse of sun. At least kilts are traditionally worn with sensibly long socks and are of a good stout texture. I'm all for traditional dress. I wish we English had one.

we do! it consists mostly of woad

Not in this weather! Especially if you are a true Scottie. You would turn blue with cold.

Clearly you've never worn a kilt! Every time I wear mine I think I might melt. It's one of the warmest (and heaviest) outfits you'll ever wear.
A kilt is constructed of (usually 8) yards of heavy worsted material which is pleated. The unpleated front of the kilt overlaps and traps air between the layers thus providing added insulation. The pleats at the rear also trap even more air. Add to this the big thick woolly socks and the heavy wool waistcoat and jacket combo and you've got more cold weather protection than a highland coo!

The reason that kilts drag blokes towards the bar is directly related to the level of thirst related to dehydration 'cause you're boiling and therefore chokin' for a beer. :D

Do not buy one on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh for £20. A decent kilt will set you back anything from £200 to £300 and is made of a long stretch of loom woven pure wool tartan. Any reputable kilt maker will measure you up and make it so that the kilt can be let out in future as your gut undoubtedly expands over time.

If you haven't got a clan name in the family then decide on green or red or blue and narrow it down you could maybe go for one of the old Regimental tartans - Hunting or Royal Stewart, Seaforth Mackenzie etc if you have military pretensions!

Styles - not aware of many styles - a proper kilt is flat at the front and pleated at back.
ps Don't buy a dress tartan -they are for wee lassies to go highland dancing in!
Avoid those plain black ones or football and rugby type tartans, they may be trendy now but they'll not last.

Length wise the hem should sit about the middle of the knee. The reason soldiers wore it shorter in the olden days was it was easier to run about carrying a gun when the kilt was above the knee. If you wear it too short it will look like a skirt.

A kilt pin is needed to weigh it down a bit for dancing.

If the kilt is for a one-off event you'd be better hiring it.

Hiya Birdieman, thanks for the reply...

No, I certainly wouldn't consider anything cheap'n'nasty, as although I'd consider myself at times a cheapskate I do look for quality & would rather spend a couple of extra quid if it means I get what I need & want, albiet at the right price.

I'm 1/4 MacPherson via my grandmother, so one of the MacPherson Tartans would be my preferance.

So far this seems to be the range within macpherson I have to choose from:-
http://www.thescotlandkiltcompany.co.uk/all_tartans.php?search=macpherson

And I supose my preference at an initial glance is for the Hunting:-
http://www.thescotlandkiltcompany.co.uk/product_tartans.php?tartans_id=1046=Macpherson%20Hunting

Clan Ancient:-
http://www.thescotlandkiltcompany.co.uk/...0Clan%20Ancient

or similar weathered look within that range.

Seems there are 5 yard & 8 yard in what I would probably consider.

And I'd like to be able to have it available to me to not only to as I've sugested to play golf but for weddings & new years celebrations etc, maybe even for hillwalking as this is another interest of mine which along with photography & making music has taken a back seat of recent years.

As you can tell probably from my online handle, I've quite an interest in the heritage of the British isles in general as well as ancient heritage & mythology of these isles.

So therefore if I were to be going for a fulloutfit & not simply the kilt in its own right I'd be also looking for the most traditionally correct rather than modern formal smart outfits.

To be honest I'm not too taken by the site I've just found the links on, though the images of the Tartans themselves seem of a viewable quality to start to make an initial choice, though additional guidance wiould be apreciated, as to whether to got for 5 yard or 8 yard, etc.

Though not quite what I've got in my minds eye, this :- http://www.heritageofscotland.com/Jacobean-Kilt-Outfits/cid,11,pid,20,package.php

or this:-
http://www.heritageofscotland.com/Jacobean-Kilt-Outfits/cid,11,pid,19,package.php

seems to be heading in the direction I'm thinking of.

Though the couple of styles on this page seem alright as a modern compromise:- http://www.heritageofscotland.com/Tweed-Kilt-Outfits/cid,3,packages.php

Any other suggestions would be most welcome,as to where to windowshop online & where to actually shop for what I'm after.

Birdieman again thankyou for the very helpful reply, even if in general are esentially preaching as it were to the converted...lol, but still welcome. :)

P.S. Oh & I'd certainly have a proper fitting so recommendations North or South of the border of where to do this will in the end be essential.

P.P.S. apologies for the broken links in the later half of this post.
