Keep your cool

The UK has provisionally recorded its highest-ever temperature, with a reading of 39.1C in Charlwood, Surrey, before midday.
Once verified, the extreme temperature will surpass the UK record of 38.7C, set in Cambridge in 2019.
But Tuesday's temperatures are expected to climb higher still, with places along the A1/M1 corridor expected to see up to 42C later.

I ran an errand to Tesco this morning. Blooming freezing in there. I am going back a 11pm to sleep there!

In all seriousness... how many of the folk having a moan about the heat spend lots of money flying to hot places on holiday?

It's a few days a year in the UK... tell the media to get a grip. Back to normal tomorrow! The constant moaning even extends to good weather! Second week of August, after 3 days rain, they'll say "British summer is a washout!"
Agreed. It's hot, but it's not the end of the world. It will cool down over the next few days, and so why not enjoy it now while you can. It's not for me for a few reasons:
  • I don't like the heat, never have.
  • I'm pale skinned and fair haired and fry easily. Slip, slop, slap for me when I go out.
  • I'm working from home with no air-con so can't even settle with a beer (well several) as I would do on holiday.

I think there is a different in holiday heat verses Uk heat. We was in cyprus a month also and 36* was lovely, just back from getting a sarny and 41* is unbearable

Mind you I couldn’t find a pool or swim up bar on route to the cafe

It kind of is though, its a huge sign that humans are rapidly ruining the planet. Action needs to be taken now to firstly stop the damage we are doing, and then to try and repair what we have done over the past 30 years really its been at its worst.

For sure, and I used to work for ICI which produced CFC's, chlorinated solvents (VOC producers), and lots of other things which are now known to damage the planet. I do my best to be green and keep consumption down, but the big using countries are, generally, ploughing on regardless. Paying lip service and not much else.

We've had a couple of roads being closed as the surface has melted....
The bigger of our 2 Tesco has had a major refrigeration failure and almost the entire cold/frozen food aisles are empty...
Roads are very quiet out there..OK there's no school run but its still quiet.
The worst bit is the strongest breeze blowing 40° heat into your face....

Part of the A14 near Cambridge has buckled.

It’s savage out there. I walked to the shop at lunchtime and it feels much hotter than yesterday. Maybe it’s the wind making it feel hotter.

I played 18 today, started at 10.30. Fundamentally a nice warm day albeit with a gentle breeze which cooled things down a bit. Lots of other players out there, the odd one with a brolly up to give a bit of shade.
Great day for golf.

You're not wrong. I played yesterday teeing off at 1.30; sensible precautions meant it was fine. On Tuesdays we have a 9 hole roll up starting at 6. From the comfort of the air-conditioned office I thought I might; having now got home I'm going nowhere near the course in this heat, I is definitely worse than yesterday.

Just found out the heathland between addington palace and Shirley park has just gone up with 60 fire fighters in attendance.

Not a single part of me wants to go near the course!

On a side note, does opening the loft hatch really help?

I guess it depends where you are. In Lincolnshire right now (4:50pm) it's still 38 degrees C

Here is 40 degrees , we have 3 fires locally that I've seen reported (could see them on way home aswell)

The town next to my golf course is in the process of being evacuated apparently as they can't stop the fire (one of the mums from the school lives there)

In my last hour of work I had 3 seperate points failures due to the heat

One fixed the other two won't until 7pm when it cools down , luckily just locked 7 trains in depot rather than effecting the main

Yes definitely, in Bristol now it’s clouded over with a few showers and will be 17 degrees tonight - the comforting thing for the middle of England is that this weather will be with you shortly.
