Sorry to harp on about this, but went down to AG earlier and tried 3 sets of irons (Nike VR Cavity, Mizuno MP-52 & MP-57).

Tried 6 iron in each and hit 5 balls with each.

1st up MP-52 which i averaged 171yrds and a swing speed of 85mph (which was the same with all 3 clubs). Felt nice off the club face and averaged 6yrds off centre of the fairway.

2nd Nike VR - Averaged 168yrds. Just didnt feel right at all. Averaged 8yrds from centre off fairway.

3rd MP-57 - WOW! Averaged 186yrds and 3yrds off the centre of the fairway. Even managed to hit one 192yrds (including roll, think it was 186yrds carry). These were fantastic and felt perfect off the club face.

Every shot with my irons had a slight draw (which was pleasing), except when I tried the MX-700 driver which I hit with a slight fade.

AG had a good deal on the 57's £500 less £150 off for your old irons so £350 + my MX-15's. They even checked my lie angle 3 times which was spot on and needed no adjustment.

Now debating whether to go to Mizuno now too? :p

PPE,

have a look here

AG may not quite be the deal you think. These guys are very quick with delivery. I have used them before and speak from experience.

If you look at 4-PW option it is very good price.

Check out their Drivers as well.

57s are very nice indeed, again from personal experience. Got mine for a bit more forgiveness compared to MP30s I had before.

Very jealous! They are some great clubs and look so sexy!

Are you definitely getting them? If you go to the Mizuno in New Malden and up for a game im sure some of us Surrey guys will be up for it.

That would be fantastic mate, but I am extremely busy at work at the moment and New Malden is 141miles and 2hrs 30min from where I live.

I can combine Clays with a client that I have in Oswestry but i have no clients down your way mate. I may be starting a refurb job down in Banbury soon if thats any good?

I'd definitely think about Clays and making sure the shaft specs are absolutely spot on. From what I recall the others on here that have used Clays have all got pretty good deals anyway. If you don't need anything differenct spec wise you then have the choice of two retailers.

PPE,

If you look at the options available on thye RHS of the scree, they say they will supply longer/shorter shafts, different grips as you want it. The price will recalculate if you choose better grips. Shaft length does not alter cost. Ans standard DG shafts dont push the price either. Not sure about fancy shafts though.

I bought a MP FliHi 3 iron to match my existing set and got it same shaft and 1/2" longer with standard grip. Cost me nothing extra and delivery came from mizuno direct in about 7-8 days. Went back and got a 4 MP flihi as a reslut of that service.

If I was in the market for clubs right now, I'd seriously consider using them. I've dealt with a chap called karl there and he has been very helpfull on more than one occassion. Last time was a speculative call about availability of a putter, he found one and got one for me and it was delivered in three days. Not bad on the run up to Christmas !

I certainly think their prices are generally as good as other places on the web.

DCB - Thanks a lot for taking the time to reply with all of the info that's really helpful, and to all others also.

186 yards with a swing speed of 85MPH? That is the same swing speed as me and I only average about 155 with my 6 iron. :D What shaft was in the 52?

What did you hit them on/in? Vector? Trackman? where you hitting in a net or out on a range? Where you using a bouncy ball? :D

They are some stats, where the hell am I going wrong?

TonyN - I was hitting into a net using a Vector. I was getting scores (the one in the top right corner) of 79, 82 & 84. The contact was very good (you know when you have hit it out of the sweet spot) and this was evident when I looked at the marks on the stickers that they put over the club face.

To be honest the distance is secondary to me, I am really looking at the accuracy which at an average of 3yrds off line was very very pleasing.

I know that the shaft in the 57 was a regular Dynamic Gold but dont know about the 52.

I will be booking an appointment in the morning to make a visit to Clays, as even though I was hitting it well, 5 balls into a net is not enough for me. I would like to try different shafts and hit the ball out there instead of into a net 6ft in front of me.

Clays will give you a reality check mate, I don't mean to pee on your parade but those stats will not be the same out on the range into the wind etc.

They are very impressive but I always take indoor nets with a handful of salt.

Clays is a great place and after a good hour and half you will have a much better picture of your averages. You can't go wrong with mizuno, with the chance to sample lots of different shafts you are bound to find something that will suit you perfectly.

Good luck. Keep us posted.

Irrespective of the maker, there is nothing to beat hitting outside where you get a true reflection of how the ball flies. That said Mizuno are great clubs but don't be too upset if Clays tell you that you are hitting much shorter than a bay in a shop

Thanks again guys.

I think the Vector was broken!!! It did feel like a good contact though, but I am not reading too much into it.

Even though on the range its a bit different, I would like to have the facility of trying my selected irons out for a round opposed to hitting a few balls on the range.

Anyway my current distances are as follows:-

SW (56 deg) - 100 yrds
PW - 120yrds
9-iron - 135yrds
8-iron - 150yrds
7-iron - 160yrds
6-iron - 170yrds
5-iron - 180yrds
4-iron - 190yrds

These are TOTAL distances.

I'll let you know what Ping come up with on Saturday.

Looking forward to reading your report on Ping, has been a promise that I have been making to myself for a long time to go to Gainsborough for a fitting. Do not want to do it until I can afford whatever is recommended though so maybe next year.

Like Tony, I think you'll find that the actual yardages you are achieving will fall short of that which AG were claiming. However, like you said yourself, your concern is more to achieve a close dispersion figure.

The equipment at Clays seems very accurate and they keep the machines calibrated properly. With the best will in the world, I'd place more confidence in the tech machinery and the ability of the operators of that machinery, with Mizuno at Clays. For the record, I went for a fitting with no particular preconceptions; I'd never been fitted before and had been using my old Mizuno irons for the last 16 years. I ended up with 52's and the appropriate shafts. The thing that amazed me most was the importance of having the correct match of shaft. The combination of shaft options available for you to try out at Clays seemed enormous, as I'm sure Tony would confirm.
All the best with your final choice.
