I've been been having a manic time at work for the last few months and the department who's systems I support today gave me an on the spot bonus to say thanks.

Nice.

So, half of it is going on nappies (apparently) and the other half is likely to go straight to the pro shop...

3 wood is a club I am missing. I have a big distance gap between 5 wood and driver, and the 5 wood leaves me short on some par 5s and 'too short & safe' on tighter par 4s. Ideal space for a 3 wood.

The other option is a hybrid to replace my 3 iron. My 3 & 4 irons go almost identical distances. 3 can go further, but I am always safer with the 4 to be sure. 5 wood is 19 degrees, and it carries about 210-220 yds or so. Was thinking of a 19 or 21 hybrid to replace the 3 iron.

Which would you be buying if it was you shopping?

Personally, I'm swaying towards the 3 wood over the hybrid, or if I bought from the USA, then could get both for the price of a 3 wood here :D

Cheers

Tell me about it...comparing prices here with those in the US is scary. We get ripped off at every turn, it seems. :(

Somebody somewhere should do something!

Think it just depends on the style of your game and what club your most in need of really.

I personally just carry a 3 wood and dont really ever need anything between that and a 4 iron.

My 3 is just a safe driver really, or to shoot at the safer par 5's in 2

The US prices can be cheap but beware of the charges made in the UK. These can bring the actual cost in line with UK prices.

I'd probably have to go for the hybrid. I know from my own course I use the hybrid far more often (long par 3's, out of the rough etc) and as the GM magazine featured hybrids you have no excuse for not doing your homework before you go and try some out.

I'm always reluctant about ordering via the US due to custom charges etc but if you really want a 3 wood as well my advice would be to go with the hybrid brand new and then go to your local AG or similar and see if there are any decent 2nd hand models around. Alternatively prove to the forum who wears the pants in your house and get both and let us know how HID reacts!!!!

oh, I know who wears the pants in our household... but sometimes I do get to watch what I want on TV (assuming there are no soaps on!) :D

I'm in Dubai so no logal AG store, and from what I can see, nowhere at all that sells 2nd hand clubs :D

I have a friend who lives in Texas and works between there and Dubai so I can get him to pick stuff up and take it through with him when he is back in September(no customs issues getting into Dubai compared to UK)

I had a round last night after work and monitored what clubs I was hitting from what location. I found that on the shots I used the 3 iron (warm up on the range, 1 tee shot and 2 off the fairway) I hit it well; 200-210 yds. The 5 wood was used off the fairway on 2 par 5s and ended up about 30 yards short on 1 and 15 short on the other. Hit well, and both shots carried 220 yds.

So, I have a gap where if I need to hit around 240-250 off the fairway, the 5 wood can't make it. Also, if I am hitting the 3 iron well, I can hit as follows;

5 iron = 180
4 iron = 190
3 iron = 200
5 wood = 220

I think I am going to stick with the 3 iron - hitting it well sure puts a smile on your face! I'm going to hunt down a 3 wood this week to fill the gap I have between 5w & driver to help on the par 5s and make me safer on the tight 4s. Callaway X 2008 is high up the list... As would a Titleist 906F4. Will see where I can try both side by side and compare.

If I was to get a hybrid, it would prob be a 2H Callway X 18 deg or a Titleist 585H 17 or deg to replace the 5 wood down the line. As I am hitting the 5 wood well, there is no rush for these at the moment.
