Quite a few of the competitins at my club have a max handicap of 18.
That's not to say that higher h/cappers cannot play. However, they are only allowed 18 shots, even if they play off, say 28.

It just doesn't seem fair. How can a golfer off 28 lower his handicap if he loses 10 shots before he even starts?
I suppose it deters high players from entering which smack of elitism, private comps for mid to low golfers.
High handicappers pay the same club subs as the lower guys, why should they be penalised?

Could it be the threat of the high fellas winning and getting their name on the boards?

Discuss. :)

I can understand your frustration. However I am sure that as a poster has stated, for the purpose of the comp you can only have 18 shots. However for the purpose of the round qualifying for your h/cap then I am sure you get the full 28. Therefore keep plugging away and you will be down to 18 eventually!

For the purpose of your handicap you will still get all 28 shots just not when it comes to working out final scores

Agreed. Anything else would be contrary to handicap rules.

Doesn't seem fair to me basher. If you have a legit handicap then that is what they should be allowing you to use.

If the R&A deem this handicap system fair it doesn't seem right a club can 'adjust' the system to their liking.

It's probably to stop the occasional bandit. But there are other ways. Like at our place. You have to play 3 rounds for you're hcp then play 3 qualifying comp rounds before you are allowed to win anything, 6 qualifying rounds if it's a major.

at our club we have comps for the both high and low players and a couple that anyone can enter and no one seems to moan

Could be a way of letting the lower handicap players get their value for money from their subs up to the same level as us enthusiastic higher h'cap players - measured on a £ per shot basis.;)

Just once in a while it would be nice for a lower handicap player to win a nice prize for a change don't you think ?

3/4s and 7/8s all seem to have disappeared; yet 1 stroke for dropping out of a ditch is 1/30 of the handicap of a 28, yet is 1/10 of my allowance.

2/72 - see me for extra maths

1/30 of 28 =
1/10 of 11 =

I don't see anything wrong with some comps being off limited handicaps - though two round matches shouldn't as on on balance low handicappers should win these. Their consistency and (*controversy warning*) the advantage the handicap system gives them should ensure this.

At our club we have competitions for seniors that I'm to young to enter. Competitions for juniors that I'm to old to enter. The Saturday comps that I can play in are also open to seniors and juniors......and I still have to pay full membership.

That's life I'm afraid.

;) :p
