Just an idea.......

Hi Twire
I can see where you are coming from, but having maintained a members' database in another sphere, I think you might find it's more work than you realise - and GM is effectively doing it for us!Best to use what we've got than to reinvent the wheel (that's before you start working round DP issues).
You could just encourage users to publicise their home club, or ask GM to add it as a field in user info.

Ok, A suggestion if I may.

Email MikeH. (Golf Monthly editor and Commander in Cheif) Put your idea to him and ask him what he thinks of it. I would imagine you would somehow want to incorporate GM's name into it being it is forum members details and if you dont want a copyright suit on ya plate, you'll need permission.

No reason to stop you hosting this yourself(somehow, MikeH might even have a few ideas for you) If you get the all clear and get something up and running that proves to be worth while, I would lend a hand for sure, whatever I can do to help. But take the correct route first.

Welcome to the forum by the way!
Tony
That's an excellent idea - persuade Mike to advertise it in the mag as a facility available through the forum

don't want to rain on this but I'd think this one through. at the moment it's confined to a 'relative' few currently active on the forum. open it up through advertising in GM and suddenly it's a full time (unpaid) service.
now that's not without it's benefits, as it could lead to overseas contacts but there could/would be a big downside to.

Reading through the responses on here regarding this excelent idea clearly shows how much effort would be needed and indeed the creation of a specific web site would not be any more taxing, I think a quick note on here when someone is visiting an area is all thats needed.
A great idea though.

Thanks to all who contributed to this thread.

After reading all your comments, I now realise it's not as easy and straight forward as I first thought. Although I like a challenge, I don't like to flog a dead horse. I'll put this idea onto the back burner for now, but if anyone would like to re-ignight the idea I'd be glad to help.

In the meantime, I will add to my signature the offer of a game. So if anyone's down in Devon, just PM me and i'll see if I can accomodate.

There are sites that attempt to do something like this but not sure how well it would work in practise. It certainly would be good to be able to go somewhere & know someone in an area you could contact to posibly get a guest fee rate somewhere. I'd certainly not be adverse to it, but the lagistics involved would be enourmous as everyone has diferent schedules & comitments which can change almost at a moments notice. best we can do is add something in our sig
