Forgive me if this has already been discussed.

After reading the threads on pay and play and how expensive it was to play other courses. I had a thought of someone holding a data base of bona fida members on here who wanted to participate....The idea being, if I was going to say Kent on business or pleasure, and wanted a game of golf. I could look on the data base, contact a member in the area and see if we could hook up for a game. Hopefuly the member will be able to sign a guest in with reduced green fees.

A simple data base is all thats needed with very few details.

Name - County - Golf Club/website - E-Mail addy - etc

This could then be e-mail to all members participating, and updated and resent when new members join.

Your thoughts please...

Interesting idea but issues include who will run it and how up to date would it be (over time). There are a number of sites that give details (in varying degrees) on most if not all UK courses and so it would surely be easier to put a post on here saying I am in X on the XX anyone fancy a game and seeing which members are free from what course.

It would be good, I admit.

For the time being, I tend to take note of where folk are and cheekily "ask" for course help or invites when I go travelling.

I'd be surprised if a post asking "I am visiting XYZ" didn't get any responses.

There will always be some issues to sort out, but with the input of peeps on here, I'm sure a system could put together. On the subject of holding the data base, if there was enough interest in the project, I would be pleased to give it a go.

The problem with just putting up a post asking if anyones availble is A) They might not log on for a week or two B) Threads dissapear off the front page very quickly.

If your a member of the system, your not going to mind someone sending you an e-mail asking for a game.

Anyway's Homer.....I still have family in Crowthorne, Sandhurst and Ascot....so I might be up before xmas ;)

Sounds like a good idea I'd be up for it would be good to get other forummers opinions on courses and if anybody is up my way they are more than welcome to join me for a game.

Good idea in theory but I dont think it will work.

You will get people signing up who just forget about the site. You'll send an email and they wont answer, then you'll have to put a post on the forum asking for a game anyway. Save the agro, just make the post.

I am not sure that I would be happy with my details being available to strangers aswell.

Who would host it? Where would it be hosted? Who would run it? Who would update it?

I would love you to prove me wrong because it would be a great tool to have at our disposal, if it worked.

Maybe we could have a "course review lounge" on the forum where everyone puts a review for a course they have played and the cost. Then if the person is happy to they could be PM'd if they are willing to sign people in as visitors when they want to play.

Hope this makes sense cause i'm on the phone.

I think it's feasible without the necessity of the private info if it is run through PM's. You would just need courses and locations and for many that's already given. (Additional info could be green fees, whether they accept green free or other vouchers and if they give reduced rates when with a member - mine doesn't)

This would resolve the issue of vanishing posts though not of being online. then again how many regulars log on to check mail without also logging on to the forum?

The only details that would need to be given in the first instance is your name, county, club and e-mail addy.

It wouldn't need to be hosted "live" just a basic data base thats e-mailed to all who are interested. updates could be done once a week and then blanket mailed to all concerned. Members could even be verified after a while...lets say you come down and have a game with me, we then both e-mail admin to let them know....after that we would both be verified...

I would give the admin side a go if there was some help from a few seasoned members here.

Crazy, I know, but you would then have person-identifiable information and would be processing it subject to the Data Protection Act. Much better to use the facilities of this site (pms, sign-on names etc) methinks?

I'm sure you can get around that by signing a disclaimer.

This is the sort of information needed to see if its feesable to do.

Thanks for your input

Ok, A suggestion if I may.

Email MikeH. (Golf Monthly editor and Commander in Cheif) Put your idea to him and ask him what he thinks of it. I would imagine you would somehow want to incorporate GM's name into it being it is forum members details and if you dont want a copyright suit on ya plate, you'll need permission.

No reason to stop you hosting this yourself(somehow, MikeH might even have a few ideas for you) If you get the all clear and get something up and running that proves to be worth while, I would lend a hand for sure, whatever I can do to help. But take the correct route first.

Welcome to the forum by the way!

If anyone was coming to my area and was looking for a game I would be only too willing to sign them on and have a game (I was gonna say 'play with them' but thought better of it ;) )
