Joe Root

Just a thought , is sledging any different from the banter you get on the first tee ? As in " Hey Bill watch out for the tree on the right , you know, the one you hit last week " ? ;)
Big difference. I'm guessing the 1st tee banter is something you would only do with a mate. Sledging tends to be a bit nasty, rarely funny (some well known exceptions), and with the aim of unsettling someone. There is no 'fun' in sledging except for the person doing the sledging.

Think there is. Sledging is trying to upset the opposition, probably against someone you don’t know apart from on the field. Banter is between mates and usually friendly with no malice.

Forumers that have a go at other forumers they obviously don’t like, seem to think it is banter, or bantz as some like to call it. No it isn’t, just cheap digs at best but more likely trolling.

Unless it's pointing out the trees down either side of the 1st tee at Waterlooville ….. then it's definitely acceptable :p

(the forum member involved will know what I mean and how they then nailed it straight down the middle and let a few choice words come back in return!)

But if we are going to applaud and take note of what Root said for his response then, then is it fair for the media to highlight it?

“You're playing Test cricket, people will look at this game as a dead rubber but it certainly doesn't feel like that when you're playing for your country - everything counts, every opportunity counts," said Root after the close of day three.
"You can see that in the way he approaches the game and that's how I feel about it as well.
"Sometimes things are said on the field but they should stay on the field. I think they can sometimes be caught in the moment and not always say what you want to say or think you're saying.
"I think you should leave it there."

Root hasn’t taken it any further.

It is a mixture of the media and various pressure groups that have run with this. Root has not looked to make anything out of it, it was an on field mic that picked it up and others have taken it on. His response is excellent but he is not trying to make capital out of it.

When have the media ever decided if something is 'fair'. They see a story, they go for it, social media people tweet, retweet and around the world it goes............

Totally agree over Root and people may or may not be reading too much in to it, Root, at his level, may of seen it as banter and had that line ready to shut him or anyone else up.
It’s others saying sledgeing/banter is wrong, only Root can answer that and the only way to get him to answer is to put unfair and undue pressure on him.

The umpire dealt with it. The authorities are now aware of it if the same bowler does it again. The bowler will have his card marked by by everyone and his dog. Its over, move on.

It is if everyone allows it to, unfortunately Gabriel may now have his card marked as a homophobe, rightly or wrongly.

Would be Suprised if this has run its course. Have his true comments come out yet. When they do, will his sponsors want to be associated with said comments. Unfortunately his comments are the " norm " re Gay people in parts of the Carribean. What I find odd is that, for someone that comes from a race of people that suffer racial abuse in life and in sports. He would be a bit more understanding in opening his cakehole when making comments like this.

Have you heard the lyrics from American rappers? 😱🤔

Over the last few years I've thought Joe Root to be a top batsman....when I saw this reported I thought what a top man!

I don't know why but I've always wanted the national captains to be more ambassadorial in their manner...that's why I think Beckham was a great captain, ditto Alistair Cooke and Martin Johnson...rather than just the best/most famous player like Rooney, Owen Farrell and until today Root.

Joe Root might just be stepping up to the plate now
and can do us proud.

Is it cricket or baseball? :);)

..fetching coat now...

Having a 30 yr old lad who played more rap that has burst my ear drums, unfortunately yes. I think the point I was trying to make is just this week there has been a survey where racial abuse at football is still more widespread then was originally thought. Sportsmen and women are being racially abused yet some cricketer thinks it is acceptable to " sledge" someone by using another form of abuse.

Whilst Afro Caribbeans as a race have suffered abuse, I wonder how much he will have suffered personally if he has remained in the West Indies where he will be in a racial majority? My experience is that racial abuse is more usually suffered when the victims are in a racial minority. I therefore wonder if he hasn't suffered it & is less aware than we might expect?

Now there's a thought.

Don't want to go into details on here re why gay people and specifically gay men are so disliked nay hated in parts of the Caribbean. But I was told in great detail where those hated ideas originally came from. If true (and I never googled to see if they are), then there is a fair degree of understanding as to why. However that was back In The days of slavery and that was hundreds of years ago. The world has changed since then, as Joe Root so eloquently put.

So why is sledging OK in cricket, but not OK in golf ? E.g in an inter club match ? Is it called gamesmanship ?
I should add that I am not a fan or believer in this behaviour, and often question what is the difference between banter and gamesmanship. The best I can come up with is that gamesmanship invariably occurs before a shot is played....

There is always plenty of banter when I play with my mates, but it never involves trying to put someone off. Sledging and gamesmanship has no place in any sport I play.
