Joe Kinnear Resigns

Unless a Sheik/Oligarch comes in for Newcastle I would stick with what you have, the grass is not always greener.

I agree the grass is not always greener, but when you have an owner who doesn't want to spend any money, you have to start wondering is his heart really in it. Newcastle have not bought anyone for over 12months now, but sold a few. Loic Remy is a loan, Luc De Jong is a loan, yes with a clause to buy maybe will they want to stay should Newcastle fail to qualify for Europe? And Europe that is just a pipe dream, I can't see it happening this season, mid table around 8 to 12 is where Newcastle will finish.

Be it good scouting that brings in quality players, but then why can't Newcastle keep them? Yes it's good scouting/business to buy a player for a few million and sell them for a lot of million, but that doesn't get you up the league, win games, or compete for more than the 3rd round of the cups.

It seems like Ashley just hasn't grasped that if the team does well and moves up the league and stays there, it gets put in the shop window for potential buyers to come in and pay what he wants for it. By doing what he's doing, not investing, selling the top players and having the team struggle for any kind of consistency his valuation is totally unrealistic and no buyer will give him his asking price.

Wages and CL is why Cabaye left. Not many can compete with PSG. Top 4 is what you need to aim for. You do not have to spend a fortune to get close just look at Everton. O.K I doubt they will get in but they are competing. I do think you need to bring in 3/4 good permanent signings in though during the summer

I think a Oligarch would be more suited, a sheik wouldn't like the weather up weather

Mike Ashley may have cleared the club of its debt and put it on a sound financial footing, but that money has come out of Ashley's pocket. First and foremost he is a business man and out to make a profit where he can and pretty successful he is with it, just look at Soccer sports. However he runs Newcastle as a business which he wants out of, his heart now lies in Rangers for which he has a stake.

So to the casual observer it would appear that all Askley is doing is trying to recoup some of the cash he's ploughed into the club in readiness for his departure. If a buyer came in tomorrow and offered the valuation that he has on the club and to pay him back his investment, he would be off so fast the door wouldn't be closed before he was past Hadrian's wall.

While many outside of Newcastle may think he's been good for the club, as I wrote above he's treating the club like soccer sports, buy cheap and sell dear, just look a Cabaye, bought for 4.5 million reportedly sold for in excess of 20million, businessman yes and a good one, football club owner yes, but a bad one.

From the outside looking in, ashley didn't play the hard nose businessman first though. He sat amongst the fans at the away matches, wore a top, got the ale in in the Bigg market etc. This always looked like it would end in tears, but I can't blame the geordies, as he was trying to say "I'm one of you", I buy into your fan ethos etc.

That is why when it goes wrong it hurts all the more, a bit like Torres for us, with the things he did and said for the first 2-3 years.

If Ashley had just been a sharp-suited, business apparatchik from the start ok, but he didn't. He tried to engratiate himself in with the toon army, so deserves all the criticism he gets, as far as I'm concerned.

The story continues - Willie Donachie the reserve team manager leaves club after allegedly hitting a player!

Player probably some jumped up little full-of-himself twerp - he'd got sent off - Donachie would have pulled him up for it. Player would have mouthed off to Donachie - Donachie slaps player for his insolence.

note - how can I ever forget WDs international own goal at Hampden. I was right behind Roughie standing in the Celtic end when WD passed back from halfway with Roughie standing at edge of box in middle of pitch - ball went well wide of him and into the net (as far as my memory allows me to recall) Oh woe was us - but we had to laugh. BTW - Alan Rough - great goalie - let no-one say otherwise.

NOTE - just checked - it was Jim Blyth in goal (I'd forgotten about him). Also note 70,000 for a home international against Wales - on a Wednesday night- Blimey - but I was there. And note the team - these were the days - Ally's Army.

Hmmm interesting use of the word slap:) Must have been fairly bad though for him to leave his post. You may well be correct we do not know. I am only going on what I heard on the news. Yes much as it pains me to say it that was an impressive side, couple of them I do not know but most of them are household names. Bit of a far cry away from the current crop!

What would have happened if he'd thrown a boot at him? Specially if it had connected!

@SILH Only 2 in the starting line-up playing in Scottish Clubs - 3 in Subs though. Some names I recognise, as players, though!

Which of the players don't you know. Of course I recall them all - except Jim Blyth to be honest. Maybe Jim was getting a run out in prep as 2nd choice keeper for Argentina 1978 - that glorious high point of Scottish football looming large. Probably explains the 70,000 crowd for a mid-weeker Home International against Wales. Crowds weren't always that large for these games. And Bud - aaaah Bud :)

Blyth/Kennedy and Johnston the West Brom player are the trio I am unsure of. Have to remember though I was not even born when this match took place! Yes I can remember the glorious world cup of 1978 our dismal failure to even qualify and your great win over Holland and even better loss to the mighty Peru and the battling draw with the giants of the football world Iran:eek:

Stuart Kennedy - fantastic attacking mustachioed full back. Lean and fast - would have been a great current day player. And he had a degree - so we were told over and over again.

Bud Johnston - ex Ger. Again a great feisty attacking midfielder/forward with a mop of hair - kind of the heir to Wullie Henderson mantle if I recall.

Still non the wiser, never heard of either of those two. As said though all the others were household names. How your lot managed to cock the Iran game up I will never know. Peru was bad but Iran?

Again!

So hardly in a position to criticise the results of those that did - however disappointing!

Thought it was a fair assessment as I also slagged off England as well! Took some doing but needs must.Yes the seventies were not the best for the England team by a long way. Just find it amazing that a team of Scotlands quality could only draw with Iran. I am sure had we qualified we would have seen Iran off.

Don't forget (as if I could) that this was Ally's Army - and we were going to WIN the damn thing, So Iran - a mere trifle hardly worth bothering about. And Peru - pity we forgot about Cubillas. We all knew he was a great footballer - then forgot.
