I was thinking the same thing myself Doon.

If the guy is good enough to move up the ladder the boss will know this, and if he can't afford to keep him I doubt he would begrudge him the chance of moving. I wouldn't expect too much time off though.

Honesty is always the best policy imo.

Always start negotitions from a position of power ie with another job offer, that way you'll find out exactly where you stand and if things don't go for you, upu can walk away knowing you've made the right decision. Why tell the boss about an interview though????

Personally I would use leave and hit as many as I could over a couple of days as Homer suggested. I get days where I wonder if my job is for me sometimes but I'd much rather have days like that such as today than not have the job and have to look for something while out of work. A manager would at best not be impressed if he were told your mate wanted to move on.

Really can't come up with a reason why I would tell my boss until I had an offer on the table, although to be fair I did interview with one company where the interviewer knew my boss at the time by the time I got into work next I was confronted but she understood I wasn't going anywhere in that particular job!

When I moved to London I tried to arrange as many meetings/interviews as I could per day to save too many train journeys and days off!
