Jacket and Tie....

Without J&T, you are banished to a 'cupboard' and served through a hatch! Or at least that was the case when I played it. There were 8 of us crammed onto the bench and the barman was the only person in the 'proper' lounge! We didn't stay long!

I don't find it unreasonable to require J&T when dining (as long as I know). but a proper informal lounge is really required these days. The days of the Golf Club being a Gentleman's Club are well and truly over imo - at least for most of them!

I was there entertaining clients, in the days that you could still do that, and my female colleague wasn't allowed in the bar and had to enter the dining room via the kitchen! I'm sure the ladies toilet was outside, although I could be wrong there.

Great course but not for me and I never took clients back there

Its crap like that which repels people from the sport.

Tosh! It's the time and expense!

There may be a conception of golf being all about old fuddy-duddies with their G&Ts, but that isn't reality except in a few, general special, places. Those clubs that are not special, yet still insist on formal kit everywhere will simply fade away along with their too rigid members imo.

I wear a suit and tie five days a week for work (except Fridays which is now no tie day), so as soon as the 9-5 is over it's on with the leisure clothes. The last thing I want to have to put on at the weekend is my 'work clothes'. However, if the course that I was going to play insisted on it, I would reluctantly comply as it is no big deal in the grand scheme of things.

not where I work (dixons carphone) - there are 27,000 of us, and I would bet less than 0.1 % wear a tie.

to have a jacket and tie rule, in a sports club (golf!) bar is a joke. It's so stupid I cannot get my head around it.

none of us want scruffy work wear, but come on, just because a man puts on a 30 yr old jacket and tie, that is in some way supposed to make him look smart?

I maybe in the minority here but I wouldn't be having a meal or drink anywhere that insisted on wearing a jacket and tie. If you can't eat in your golf clothes then I'll go to Mcd's on the way home.

I've just returned from Rye, well a mid-week holiday break in Camber Sands where I rent a cottage just past the golf club, which I drop in on. Its now 11am for jackets & tie but still very strict for both men & women as far as dress codes are concerned and you can only play Foursomes in 4-balls & 2-balls, no 3-balls allowed, no other formats unless agreed prior! The club car park is always full, the course in almost all weathers looks in great condition and plenty of players can be seen at all times of the day, its a members club but by invitation only or at least a month in advance at the secretary's discretion, so, even with all those rules that some on here don't like, the club looks like its buzzing all the time, so for me, if the course and facilities are excellent and I could afford it, I'd foresee and follow any rules to be a part of a great course & club, I wouldn't as some are suggesting they'd do leave a club that had an excellent well maintained course just because of some dress rules, its all about the course we play at the end of the day, the rest you can manoeuvre around IMO.

Packed course playing foursomes with rules up the *. Wouldn't interest me in the slightest. probably a great club for seniors mind you.

It's actually slightly incorrect, they play foursomes only in the morning but you can play as a 2ball in the afternoon. They also have a 2nd course where you can play as a 4ball.

I wear a jacket and tie in work when on interviews or holding assessment centres but otherwise "smart business casual" and to be fair I have no qualms on the few occasions I am required to wear jacket and tie at golf clubs (matches, AGM, certain clubs) and feel that if I want to be a member or to visit these places then their rules need to adhered to. All these clubs that still adhere to jacket and tie seem fully utilised on and off the course so there doesn't seem to be too much of a backlash anywhere

It's just wrong. Pointless, just a stupid rule, invoked by people who hanker after a world that has passed, and will not return.

The good news is that the people who "like" this rule will soon be outnumbered by the rest of us who understand that smartness, respect and civility does not envelope you by putting on a jacket and tie, but by the way you conduct yourself with others in a manner that is not related to dress in any way whatsoever.
