Our Captains Prize today and if i said my putting cost me to qualify for the final 9 holes i wouldn't be lying...
The amount of 3 putts that i had today wasn't even funny.....

I think that even with a decentish long game you can really save shots with the short irons. And the wand.....The wand...Where do i start with the wand....I could have seen how far i could throw it this morning but held the frustration back....When your putting goes your in trouble....And my 2 ball really kicked my ass today....Try as i might she just would not listen to me.....

I easily took 8 more shots than i could have this morning if i was on song on the greens....
11 over going out and 6 over coming home for a nett 2 over...So in the buffer and although i battled real hard coming down the back nine i couldn't get under par....

There's always next week i suppose.

Bob!!! another caller. It is souls destroying when the putter goes cold and you are hitting it pretty well. Had it myself a while back which prompted the change from the Anser to the odyssey.

My advice would be to hit the putting green this week, work on distance control and holing out from close rang and just try and get a bit of confidence back. Clearly with your handicap coming down you can get it in the hole so put it down to an annoying blip

I know Homer....As you probably know im swinging much the same as what your being thought....A one plane swing....My misses are usually thins and shots left of my target but its getting better since i started bringing the club back more on plane than inside the target line like i used to....

So i am hitting the ball very well to the green and to be honest my driving isnt the best but its a work in motion....
I think that i spent so much time this week on striking the ball with my wedges through to my 6 iron that as you say my putting suffered because of this today.....

Thanks Dave.

You're welcome. :)

It happens sometimes. I had 30 putts in my "social" 77 (par 70) today. Best round for some time, I'm trying not to think about what happened to you today it might be catching.

You better hope it dont.....I couldn't buy a putt today for some reason....And hit a drive on 18th par 4..... left myself 139mtrs to a back pin and went after it with an 8 iron....Approach finished level with the pin and a yard off the green....What do i go and do then only knock it in for a tweetie......

Funny ol' game!

It's not all about putting most of the time....

It's all about everything.

You can be the best Driver in the World but if you can't putt you ain't gonna score.
You can be the best putter in the World but if you can't get the ball off the tee or to the green then you're putting for bogey.

To get a score everything has to work reasonably well. It's a rare occurrance that a good score is made when one part of the game is misfiring.

Agreed, putting well helps any round but many different things are needed for a good score. Played both days the other weekend Saturday tee to green was patchy but short game red hot, Sunday tee to green was a dream short game a nightmare. Same score!

I watched the amtuer final this morning and a Master Dunbar holed a shedload of putts and imho that what won him it. if the putter was off he wouldn't have been in it for the 2nd 18 let alone the last hole.

Putts mean prizes end of

At the top end of the game it's really just a putting competition. The best putter over the duration of the competition usually wins it. I believe at our level Imurg is spot on - it's about everything. If you cant get to the putting surface then you cant be putting for a score, so all the elements of the game are equally important and until you can hit tee shots, approach shots etc then I personally don't think putting more time into the short game than any other element is the best advice.

I always try and work on that part of the game that is the weekest when I analise the round aftrerwards - so after yesterday - hitting out of long, lush, penal grass in pouring rain and just off the fairway whilst wearing a wet suit and juggling with a brolly is getting my attention this week!

I think putting is more important than the rest of the game (I would wouldn't I)

Player A
1st hole
Nice drive
nice second shot
3 putts
5

Player B
Duffed drive but not bad
second shot sliced short right rough
3rd shot hack out into bunker
4th shot out
one put
5

Who is going to feel the happier on the 2nd tee?

Player B
His up and down turned a 6 into a 5

Player A is miserable because a simple thing like putting turned his possible birdie start into a bogey. Think how hard he will hit his second tee shot.

Mentally, good putting does wonders for a player who isn't on his/her game

A lot depends on how bad the 3 putt is.
If you 3 putt from 10 feet then that's a big downer at any standard but a 3 putt from 60 feet isn't necessarily bad news....
Equally if B's drive was in "hack-out" territory then that 5 is probably going to be a 6

I'll agree, from the Mental side, being a good putter can't have any downsides but I'll come back to earlier...
If you're the best putter in the World but you're putting for a bogey every time then you ain't gonna get to single figures.....

You need to be decent at all of it.

As per my post last night, I 4-putted twice yest as well as 3-putting twice.

Shot 13 over par

Take some those silly putts out and add in my 10Hcap then I would have been in the mix.

The wand and practice ball bag in in the boot for a midweek practice on the dancefloor

Chapters 1&2 of "Putting it out of your Mind" were also read last night
