Is this normal/ typical

To be honest though, any club should have the right to demand whatever it wants from paying members, if you dont want to join, dont. Plenty of other clubs out there.

Exactly there is not set of rules and a club is something you have the option of joining, if you are happy with the rules sign up if not jog on....
The difference in h/cap between ladies and gents is the same ratio to max, 3/4 of max allowable so my guess would also be junior had to have 40 h/cap before joining.

I'd pay double my fees happily to play at a category 1 golfers only track. Medal rounds in 3 hours, no idiots asking about tee heights, no one asking if they should play a provisional when their ball is 30 foot into the gorse bushes, no one out with their golf ball retriever trying to fish their yellow Pinnacle out of a pond.

Why has this never been tried? I genuinely think it would be well supported.

I'm happy to play with anyone at my holiday course and in bounce games at certain clubs but I would love to just play with decent golfers in medals and during the week at my home track.

It could work in a "feeder" system with affiliated clubs. Once you reach cat 2 you move from one feeder course to another and then move if your good enough to reach cat 1. If you go up you join the feeder courses again. I think it would make golf more enjoyable for all.

Thoughts?

If i'd seen your comment 2 months ago I would have disagreed on a massive scale. However I have started playing with a 2 handicap and I have to admit even as a 16 handicap it is a better day out. I still play with a 28 golfer on a weekly basis and enjoy the round too but have drew the line at standing in knee high wet rough looking for balls

Thank you. I wouldn't have very club set up like this. Maybe just one or two clubs per county which gives golfers the choice. I firmly believe that if you golf with people of your own ability you enjoy it better and it becomes more competitive and fun.

Having a goal to move towards, not just a number must surely be a better motivator?

Again another guy who has good ideas, I would have no problem at all paying double for the reasons you have stated.

Most folk go out for a game of golf and play for the enjoyment of the game which is fair play but there is nothing worse than getting stuck behind someone who is slow and racking up shots here there and everywhere, where is the enjoyment for the guys behind.

This is pish.
In a medal some of the slowest players at my course are the low handicaps. I was out in front of a group of the 1st team golfers, all cat 1, in a recent medal. At my happy hacker 17cap playing with a 14 and a 19 capper, by the 17th they had lost 3 holes on us.
And woe betide anyone who gets stuck behind them as they categorically will not let anyone through.

So good luck with your cat 1 only course, it may not be as quick as you think.

There is a difference between deliberate play and walking through knee high rough looking for balls every hole. There is also a difference between deliberate play and playing army golf. There is a difference between deliberate play and standing discussing where the ball entered the hazard and where to drop.

Your example was probably them slowing down to stay in the zone rather than being stuck behind a slower group of high handicap players. A good golfer can dictate the pace of play.

Er... Wrong!

I've certainly seen this - though I've certainly experienced (more) long rounds with 20+ cappers.

Taken only slightly further, the fact that it takes Pros 5 hrs plus to play a round - in 2-balls! - would seem to makes a lie of the Bomber/Harris_Tweed assertion, which would be commercial suicide anyway!

But what's the difference? If they took 4 1/2 hours to play their round, it's still 4 1/2 hours... whether it's because they were 'taking their time' or they are rubbish at golf?

Commercial suicide I doubt. I know at least 8 of us who would jump! lol

Pro's are playing for a living. I'm playing to get a handicap reduction or win a £1, £1, & a £1. Hell I might even play for a lasagne and chips if the mood takes me!
