i'm thinking of leaving the belfry and joining another local course. there is a small waiting list and whilst perusing their web site i came along this......

''A certain level of Golfing ability is normally expected and, if in doubt, Proposers should arrange games for their Candidate with members of the Committee. Potential may be taken into account but current Handicaps of above 21 for Gentlemen and above 36 for Ladies are likely to have a lower priority. Beginners may be required to take lessons from the Professional and not be permitted to play on the Course unless accompanied by another member, until he/she has obtained a Club Handicap''

shamowna!

I wouldn't say that is common now but that was the norm in Lincolnshire about 10 years ago. There are only a few courses round here that would now expect that ability. Most just take your money off you and couldn't care less. Is it a traditional members owned club you are looking at joining?

I'd say this is the exception rather than the rule.
Most private clubs near me are in the same position as the pay and play course's, they need members.
The private clubs near me are offering deals on memberships/joining fee's, and even offering half price greens fee's at peak times during summer.
Having seen the standard of some golfers at private clubs, i wouldn't think you'd have anything to worry about unless you were facing the wrong way on the tee.

Whittington Heath?

Definitely Olde Skool! Another touched by the hand of Colt!

A few of the competitors in the Ladies British open would have had to change before being allowed in the Clubhouse.

Though will apparently be affected by HS2

normal/typical......

t's representative of a club that wishes to maintain playing atandards amongst it's membership

the differential for ladies might be a function of the red tee positions, or (more likely) a realistic acceptance of ladies 'starting' handicaps when taking up the game - and a need to expand the ladies section.

some clubs have courses and facilities that enable them to be selective - personally I find these attractive; but if your idea of club membership is in conflict with these just say no.

I would think, nay hope that it is the exception these days. I was hoping that golf was becoming less elitist but clearly not. I am all for clubs holding onto traditions, even dress codes but I would have thought handicaps limits would be off putting to new golfers who have yet to get to the required standard but have the desire to be a member, the means to join, and would bring plenty to the club

I know it says there is a chance players "with potential" will be considered but in practice would that be the case. We have players at my club off high handicaps including 28's that are a pleasure to play with, are quick, observe etiquette and play within the rules so I can't see the problem with letting them become a member

I would think, nay hope that it is the exception these days.

You mean like Sunningdale, The Berkshire, Swinley Forest, New Zealand and St Georges Hill - all within half an hour of your gaff!

Golf Clubs don't need to be all the one style, in the same way that anything from Cars, Restaurants, Hotels and most other commodities have different styles - and costs!

If it is Whittington Heath then I'd definitely make the move, but I'm surprised there's a waiting list in view of the possible HS2 impact.

Only played it once (on a meet arranged by the great Smiffy) but enjoyed pretty much everything about it.

Was typical/normal few years back now would say it's only found at a few old skool clubs.
More off a concern would be the affect of HS2 in a few years.

Most clubs where im from are quite happy to let anyone hack it around. So i wouldnt say it was typical behaviour.

The old pro actively encouraged me to get out onto the course rather than practice in the net all time.

Reading between the lines and I'd say that this was more of a character/personality/background check. Either that or they've got a whole bunch of rich hackers already and want the new breed to be more competitive.

Or perhaps not.

This is a great way for golf clubs to go if you ask me although I don't agree with the 21 handicap limit as its seems a bit unfair, I would rather see it set at 10:whistle:

Can't see what the problem is.

When I joined as a junior I had to play 3 holes with the head of the Junior section to show I was ok before being allowed out on the course on my own.
