Is the end approaching for dedicated golf GPS devices

I use the skycaddie app on my 5 inch android phone. Pretty accurate and gives a graphical image of the course where I can see different lay up distances etc.
Also measures and records clubs/distances strokes etc as well as providing score analysis over time.
Not cheap at £18 a year, but easily comparable to the dedicated sky caddie device.

But I wear a watch. It tells the time. There will always be a need for a stand alone dmd for people like me, who don't want to take off an expensive time piece and replace it with cheap plastic tat, even if it's only for a few hours.

Cheap plastic tat keeps the same time as a £3k Breitling!

Bushnell NeoXS watch for me.
Light as a feather, (forget you're even wearing it), and battery life good enough for at least 36 holes, maybe more (if you're that way inclined).
Simplicity itself to use, some of the newer stuff has me baffled with the displays and information they give you.
Same here and it has the other added benefit of being waterproof. I'd be worried about taking my smartphone or smartwatch out into a Scottish downpour.

I have a Garmin G6 Approach and I love it. Does all I need it to and has all the courses I need. They were also good to deal with when I pointed out an error in the mapping of my home course which was rectified in time for the next update.

I don't like the idea of having my phone on whilst playing and having looked at a few apps for my phone, I can't say there's any that have made me think that I must have them.

I did have a watch (Shotsaver) and whilst it was ok, the Garmin has proved to be better in every way. I would consider a watch in the future, but as a dedicated golf device rather than one that does everything except make a cuppa!

I don't think dedicated devices will be supplanted any time soon. As is evident from the answers here, different people have different needs and wants and whilst that persists, a range of different product types will stay on the market. I mostly use a Garmin S1. Very convenient and suits me fine. Don't have to worry about it in the frequent rain.
