i'm quite confident with my 5 wood from fairways, and hybrids look very similar. Do i need one?

Do they perform differently?

Whats the main differences between a 5 wood and a hybrid?

If you are confident with your 5 wood, dont change it. The hybrids are there to help people who have trouble hitting long irons, so if your having trouble with your 3 or 4 iron why not try a few?

If you are consistant with a 5 wood, a 3 hybrid will be of similar loft and so probably won't make a real difference. However if you struggle wth longer irons, my advice would be to drop the 3 iron and replace it or the 4 iron with a 4 hybrid

I replaced my 3 iron with a decent 4 Hybrid and never looked back. Perfect 200 yard shot off the tee, very consistent.

Go and have a play with one..........

i prefer a hybrid to 5 wood cos it looks a bit more liek an iron and i hit my irons better then my woods! its personal choice at the end of the day. it is said a hybrid can get down in the rough a bit easier! but you gotta weigh up what your gonna be using it most for!

Depends on the player and what suits you. Trying them out is harmless so if you fancy them, try one (without buying) many golfers have elected to change from a bag full of irons to using hybrid clubs alongside limited number of irons, in the same way people who started golf with Driver 3/5/7 woods have also chosen hybrids. but it really depends on you, if it aint broke........ ;)

I go D, 3w, 5w, hybrid, 4i, etc.

The hybrid replaces the 3i, gives greater versatility than an iron, and the one I have is not as long as my 5w. It goes well from a dodgy lie though, which I find harder with a wood.

A mate of mine says I am 'over head covered', but it suits my game.

The downside is I only carry 3 wedges, but I do find 3 is enough most of the time.

Thats is the only problem I can see too. I have Driver, 3, 5 woods and a 3 hybrid but my coach is looking for me to carry PW (45 degree) 52, 56 and 60 degree wedges for more flexibility ptiching, around the greens and from bunkers. This would mean the hybrid or 5 wood going which I'm not convinced about yet.

Homer i would drop a 5 wood and add the 60

The 60 might save you 1 or 2 shots a round. You cant really save a 5 wood would do that.

I carry D,3w 3hybrid/3 iron which is alright for me,which is only 13 clubs as i dont carry the 60 at the moment,i could put a 5 wood in but it will give me too many options and i end up playing worse

A pro once said to me:-

How many times do you make a birdie from over 200 yards out?
How many times do you make a birdie from 100 yards in?

If the former, carry more long clubs
If the latter, carry more short clubs

That's why I've got 4 wedges and 3 fairway clubs.

I hear what everyone is saying but at the moment it boils down to a lack of confidence with the 60. My coach is going to give me a bunker lesson next time and says he'd prefer me to use a 60 and would be teaching me how to play lots of different shots with it which is why I'm in two minds.

Ideally I'd drop the 60 and keep the hybrid for its versatility out of rough and on longer par 3's but if the 60 really will be as good as he says then I guess a hard decision needs to be made and the 5 wood will probably be the one to go

Homer, I have a cunning plan.
I assume your wedge is 46 deg?
That being the case there is 6 degs between that and your SW at 52. Why not sell the 56 and get a 58 deg instead. That would give you a nice progression of 6 deg between your wedges and give you the option of the extra hybrid or 5 wood.
58 degrees is enough loft to get out of any bunker, even the road hole bunker if you're ever lucky enough to play there.
As cunning as a very cunning thing. The words "cake" and "eat it" spring to mind

I like the thinking behind that although to be fair I'd probably keep the 56 and 60 and play around with wedge numbers etc in different conditions. I might decide to go with 4 wedges in the dry summer and drop the 5 wood as the ball will run anyway but the 46, 52 and 58 sounds like a plan. Out of interest what degree wedges do you carry.

I am boring.I was taught at a very young age to open and close a SW to play the low runner of the high flop shot. that was in the early 70s. (yes, we were playing the flop shot 35 years ago.
So I saw no need for a gap wedge or lob wedge.
Since I have admitted to now owning a Rapture 18 deg hybrid I suppose I can admit that I do now have a lob wedge too.
It must have been a full moon
I carry a 46 wedge tweaked to 47 a 54 tweaked to 53 (both Ping) and a 60 Titleist and sorry, I dont know what swing weight they are. lol. Just Kidding

This is my set-up for the summer and trolley days.

I find there is enough distance gap between 5w and 3h to make it worthwhile carrying both.
Personally, I'm trying real 3 iron again a.t.m.
I can't bend a 3h r-l but I can with a 3i, it's a new strategy for 3 short holes that favour a draw.
