If people want to play league cricket they are obliged to wear appropriate clothing, i.e whites. How is golf any different?

Cricket is not dieing because it refuses to keep up with the rest of the world... golf is.... that's the difference...

You were the one who compared it to league cricket I just carried it on

So if that club are Ok with jeans etc you will be too?

Incidentally Ive seen professional cricketers practice in tee shirts & training kit etc & not whites, what if this was a practice round or even just a social round

If the club allow it I don't see the issue (not that I'd choose a football top over a golf top but its not me we're talking about)

The original question asked for people's thoughts on clothing rather than club rules.

I've said it before, and I'll most probably say it again.
If I was drawn to play somebody in a knockout competition and they turned up wearing jeans and a football shirt, I'd give them the game.

I have played in Jeans a few times. If the club allow it then there is no issue.

Whoever said get the popcorn, you were right!!

As the OP, I would just like to add that you have all raised very valid points.

Like another poster highlighted, you wouldn't play football in golf gear, so why is it the other way round? Sometimes I feel as a golfer, I'm making too much of a point of the game by playing in golf gear, but then I think, this is part of the game, so I should wear smart attire - trousers, polo shirts, shoes etc.

And that is a totally valid thought, mine is the same.... but not everyone's is and that's ok too. Lets make the game as available to as many as we can!!

In this case, I would not have minded as it was a muni course whose ambit is generally to attract as many people as possible to golf and would generally speaking be expected to have a more relaxed attitude to dress code.

That said, I do not fully agree with the 'you would not wear golf gear to play football' argument. I agree in that if it was a football match I would be wearing the proper kit, as woud be expected in a golf match or competition. As for a friendly kickabout with a football, a game amongst mates or a bit of practice, I would wear pretty much anything. I have had a kick about in jeans, cargo shorts, flip flops and even a suit once. If the football analogy is to be used then to me it would be full kit for matches etc and whatever you like for a bounce game, which actually is not a bad suggestion for golf clubs.

We are. Nobody is being excluded, just being asked to wear appropriate clothing. You wouldn't wear football boots on a bowling green, is that excluding footballers from playing bowls?

It amuses me how people claim that they are being excluded by simply being asked to turn up in appropriate clothing. There's nothing stopping anyone going down to Sports Direct, buying the clothing, grabbing their clubs and booking a tee time at the majority of courses if they want to. Golf has arguably never been more open and available to all bearing in mind the number of courses around these days.

These are probably two people borrowing someones clubs and and having a knock about. After a while most people start to wear the gear as generally we all want to fit in and not offend anyone. You will probably see them in a few weeks time head to toe in orange Poulter-esque attire.
