Is it time to match up woods?

As you know, I've become a convert to Wilson Staff recently, acquiring a Spine Driver and Fybrid 3r.
Being a convert to "square" technology, I thought I'd have a look at some square woods with V2 as standard. The only ones I could find were MD and Wilson Staff (fybrid or spine).
I 'phoned MD (in Ireland) to ask about stockists, but regrettably, they phoned to double-check my address and then since then...nothing. Thanks MD. :D
AG reckon they don't even know about spine fairways (well, Jezz has hit them?!) so the only choice left is W/S fybrid fairways......but I can't decide if the expense is worth it.
OK, so the driver is MAGIC (like, voodoo) and the hybrid is phenomenal (really, something else :)) so maybe I should look into a pair of woods from AG.
Thing is though, I hit my current mish-mash of Callaway steelhead plus (5) and TM R5 dual ti (3) quite well, just not as convincingly as my new Wilson Staffs.
It's not as if I make my good scores with the tee shot...so, should I just make do?

:D :D :D

I'd go for it.
If you like the driver and the hybrid you should like the fairways too. Especially with the same shaft. And anyway, the 5 wood didn't do Paddy any harm just over a year ago did it?

Dave,

Forgive my bluntness and hypocrisy but don't you think you might be over egging the pudding a touch here with all the changes and the search for the perfect clubs.

I understand exactly where you are coming from and to a degree I think there is some method to the madness but having seen your game is square really the holy grail when you hit the ball well enough with conventional clubs.

I have matched up 3+5 woods this year and ditched the hybrid. I am very happy with the woods and cant see a change any time soon which is a good sign for me!

Don't get me wrong I use to have a matching drvier 3 and 5 in most sets I've owned and still use matching 3 and 5 woods and feel that there is a huge uniformity from the same make and models. I'm just wondering if square is the way to go.

No, you a right. The "method", if there is one, is that I have two perfectly good fairways but they are a bit hit and miss. I rarely miss a fairway with them (particularly the 3 wood) but conversely often miss 200-210 yd par 3s with 5 wood and certainly only have a 20-25% success rate from off the fairway with 200 to go.

The other day, I hit 3/3 from 180-190 (off the fairway) with the hybrid and also used it off the tee on two holes, both A1.

I know it seems as if I've gone mad buying stuff, but it's just been drivers and hybrids (3 of each over 2 years). I have kept the drivers (other than the G5) and will use them no doubt.

it's just that niggle..... :D

In the end, there was only one thing for it.

FIGHT! :)

....between my existing 5 wood and W/S/fybrid 5 wood.

Thankfully, the "bad" shot with my 5 wood appeared after a few on the Vector, and it didn't take an expert to tell where this shot comes from. The distance (heel to toe) available to hit the ball properly with a small-headed fairway wood (it was from 2003!) is quite small on Callaway steelhead plus. 1 cm towards the heel and the shot is toast.

Tried lots with the fybrid, including some successful draws and fades.....beautiful.

Overall. Clubhead speed 85 mph
Carry approx 175-185
Total 195-210 (longest was 220)

Not further than my existing club. (seems technology doesn't always = distance)
More consistent.....YES :)

Straight.....hmm.....this is RGDave we're talking about.
Very, very straight.....the majority were way less than 10 yards off line.

Bought it. (Needless to say :))

Shan't be getting the 3 wood, the 3 I have (R5 dual ti) is too good and is nice and large faced.

:)
