is it time for a United Ireland

Should it ever have been divided?

The original intention was, I believe, for the whole of Ireland to be independent and that should have remained the case.

That question is for the people of N.Ireland and Ireland surely? Same as Scottish independence is for the Scots to decide, not the rest of the Union countries.

It is entirely logical to be one country but it could be mighty messy getting there sad to say.

However the discussions go regarding Scottish independence on other threads no one ever even contemplates violence as a potential outcome, as it should not. If only that were true for this one.

Only have to ask the people of Northern Ireland and it’s split right down the middle to the point it’s a very long way off

What’s this “renewal of Armed Conflict” ?

what with the Brixit sticking point and the renewal of armed conflict in NI, is it time for the UK to consider a United Ireland?
Did armed conflict ever stop completely? There's not much hope if peace depends on someone checking a lorry on the border.
I guess its up to the people of NI to decide but not to often.

I would have hoped after devolotion of NI there might have been a movment thus, but it appears not.

Who would be driving a Referendum if it were, i'm guessing not the DUP ?

Don't think it's the place of the "UK" to consider this tbh, more a question for the Irish (both North and South).

Given the political situation (or vacuum) in Northern Ireland for the last 3 years or so that shows no signs of change in the short term I can't imagine it's something that could happen quickly. Albeit raising the question may finally get some form of government sitting in NI perhaps......

Either way not sure how any discussions would go or what old/existing tensions may be stoked up.

Pretty inevitable in my view.

Given the fact the DUP and Sinn Fein won't even sit in a devolved parliament together I'd be interested to know how you think we get from current point to the inevitability of a United Ireland? Genuinely interested.

Not saying it won't happen, just can't see how they can be brought back for any reason from the current impasse.

Along with Scottish Independence.
Even questionable in Wales now.

Hasn't Brexit been wonderful for the UK;)

Interested to see what your view is based on considering the current political climate in NI -m

The Brexit argument seems to suggest that the only viable long term solution is that the island of Ireland becomes united. That then only leaves the thorny question of who joins who? NI becomes part of Eire. Or Eire becomes part of UK?

A trite suggestion, but look around the world to see how often the UK thought chopping somewhere in two was a good idea...

not the same though is it? Britain Ruled the whole of it less than 100 years ago then partitioned it to what it is today

Not sure how its different? You are still talking about one country pretty much being absorbed by another. Unless you do not recognise Northern Ireland as a "proper" country?

just like India and Pakistan, eh?

NI is predicted to have a Catholic majority by 2021. If Brexit goes ahead and the UK economy suffers as a result, a united Ireland within the EU will look like an attractive option for a lot of people. There will be a fair number of non-Catholics who would prefer that option. Don't forget that NI as a whole voted Remain.
