Is a 3 wood a "necessity?"

the 3 wood is a stock club off the tee for me, more so than the driver, occasionally use off the deck to a long par 5 but if didnt use it off the tee regularly would see no real reason to carry it

I don't carry one and frankly wouldn't bother, they are a swine to hit off the deck, zero forgiveness and if you can hit a driver with any degree of skill no use off the tee. I have a 5 and 7 but more than not only use the 7.

Agree entirely though I choose a 5 wood and extra wedge. If I need a "safe" shot from the tee I hit 3 iron. That said my course only has 2 par 5's and the type of course you play may influence the decision as will your distance with a 5 wood or 3 iron etc.

I have just bought a 2 hybrid, 16 degree.

It still has the distance but is much easier to hit, tee and off the deck!

What did you get? Sounds ominous.....

probably goes about 260 yards in your hands too...

A matching hybrid to the rest of my set, the Dh6, and yes it does go 260ish!!! :D :D

But, I took it out and did the most annoying thing ever! Sky mark!!

I can hit mine off the tee or off the deck equally as good as i havent been using the driver fo the past 6 months.......
I got so much practice with it that im confident in it.....
Yesteday when i knew that getting 0.1 back was inevitable i pulled out the driver for 3 of the last 4 holes....2 par 4's and a 5.......I nailed all my drives with a lovely draw.....I dont know whether this was due to the long sabatical that it got or whether my effort to get a more even and fluid tempo to my swing over the last 6 months with the 3 wood has helped or the fact that i changed my address position to addressing the ball with the toe of the club but something clicked and i pulled 9 points for the last 4 holes.....Its coming out again next weekend :D
Having said that and having read all the replies to the post im now wondering do i need a 3 wood also...... I hit my 5 wood about 200mtrs......

I have a 13* three wood and a 17* degree hybrid so if I lose any confidence in the driver I still have options

I have a driver and 5 wood, used to use a strong three wood too but found I only used it maybe once a round as the 5 wood was usually sufficient.
Long game accuracy is never ever going to be as accurate as the short game needs to be so I got an extra wedge.

I only used mine once today on our 4th and to be honest I could have hit either driver or 5 wood and still had a shot to the green as its only 320 yards. I'm tempted to take it out and go back to the 56 and 60 wedge combination.

I tried the G15 4 wood which they are really starting to push and I like the idea. Not much distance lost off the tee if used as a 3W replacement and a peach to hit off the deck and with a lower flight than the 5W and more distance which would be tempting on some of the par 5's.

The problem I could see for Smiffy is that if he went down the 4W road, there would be a bit of a gap to his hybrid. Maybe a 2H or maybe an extra wedge as he is pretty useful around the greens. Interesting problem

I agree with an earlier post that said if you play lots of different courses then more variety of clubs are needed.
Maybe do as suggested and try another 3 wood to try and get some confidence back.

Personally I never carry a 3 wood - always struggle with them.
I've recently bought a 4 wood,(Benross Trimass) which goes well off the fairway for the longer par 4's, or 2nd shots on par 5's. Might be worth a try.

Golfmmad.

As I say, I'll dig out my old Steelhead+ 3 wood and have another bash with that today (if the weather holds out).
Certainly don't want to add another wedge to my bag. I'd never use a 60 degree one, just crank the old 56 open a bit if I need some added height.
And then blade it through the back of the green
;)

I loved the G15 4 wood. Maybe I am turning into a grumpy old man then and need to get my Ping gear sorted. It is actually a pretty decent bit of kit and so easy to hit off the deck or on a low tee.
